Virginia-born, Houston-based honky-tonk prophet Mike Stinson’s disarmingly casual presentation hardly prepares one for the arsenal of high-impact country ordnance concealed beneath his perennially rumpled wardrobe. Stinson combines a deft brand of blunt lyrical simplicity with a detached vulnerability, which provides a cunning, effective setup for his specialty — the emotionally devastating ballads that have long since earned him the moniker “Jack of All Heartaches.” With an equal proclivity for hard-rocking throwdowns, Stinson represents the best hope for a future where country music doesn’t suck. Appearing on a loaded bill that includes respected cosmological troubadour Jim Lauderdale and the raw-boned, beer-joint philosophizing of outlaw acolyte Gethen Jenkins, Grand Ole Echo’s Roots Roadhouse rates as a much-needed kick in the head.
