“What a strange, strange world we live in/Where the good are damned and the wicked forgiven,” Regina Spektor laments on the surreal ode “The Trapper and the Furrier,” from her latest album, Remember Us to Life. The New York chanteuse goes on to link the machinations and ambitions of hunters, lawyers, businessmen and pharmacists as if she were describing mad, exotic animals. Spektor alternates buoyant piano-pop songs (“Older and Taller”) with stately, fanciful ballads (“Grand Hotel”) that sound like modern fairy tales. Even the most straightforward tune is lit up with dreamlike lyrics and arty embellishments, such as hip-hop rhythms juxtaposed with airy vocal passages. On “Tornadoland,” she looks out over her self-created magic kingdom and advises soothingly, “All the monsters in your mind just wanna be nice.”
