It’s sometimes hard to remember now, but the original punk scene was all about experimentation and being different. In the late 1970s, such disparate groups as Devo, Blondie and The Germs were all considered punk (and even appeared on the same Whisky bill together) before the genre was codified and the leather-jacket uniform was imposed. But even in early ’80s London, Psychic TV were defiantly unusual, blending cracked psychedelic folk with arty soundscapes in an unsettling, provocative manner. A small army of notable musicians and artists — including Alex Fergusson, Marc Almond, Lady Jaye Breyer, Monte Cazazza and Timothy Leary — have collaborated with the group or passed through its ranks, but by the late 1990s even bandleader Genesis P-Orridge seemed ready to end the project, until he reorganized Psychic TV with Toilet Boys drummer Edley ODowd in 2003.
