Flash back to the Roaring Twenties, when America was in the midst of the Prohibition: Booze was banned, stealthy speakeasies adorned Washington Boulevard, and the Culver Hotel was making its grand debut — and smuggling illicit alcohol through its underground tunnels. The grand old hotel marks its 90th anniversary with the Prohibition Ball, a Jazz Age night of extravagance inspired by its decade of origin. But this ball is being thrown for a bit of a twister: Since The Wizard of Oz was filmed in Culver City and nearly all 124 actors playing Munchkins stayed at the hotel during production, the soiree features an added dose of movie magic. Don your most dashing attire, make your way past the lineup of Ford Model T's and down the Yellow Brick Road carpet leading into the hotel to mingle with other Gatsby-esque guests and little people dressed as Munchkins. Enjoy live swing and jazz bands, burlesque performers, magic shows, blackjack tables, old-timey photo opportunities, made-to-order hand-rolled cigars and a delicious variety of dishes, all while sipping endless, Prohibition-inspired cocktails at the open bar. In true Prohibition fashion, don't forget the speakeasy soiree's password hint, "Dorothy's dog" —- but you didn't hear that from us. Culver Hotel, 9400 Culver Blvd., Culver City; Sat., Sept. 6, 8 p.m.-2 a.m.; $90, complimentary valet. 21 and older. (310) 558-9400, theprohibitionball.com.
