Join us to celebrate the cultural treasures of our Pico Neighborhood! We open up our campus to our neighbors, and will launch Culture Mapping 90404, our community-sourced website of Pico neighborhood cultural treasures with an exhibition, celebration, music, food trucks, and open artist studios. Original Salsa and Latin Music by Flaco Lowriders taking over the 18th Street parking lot Cabeza de Vaca Cultural Dance Performance Rocking Dance Class with the ladies of the Community Corps Zumba Group Family Art-Making Workshops with Sherin Guirguis and Nina Waisman The best of Santa Monica Food Trucks Artist Open Studios Kids Corner and Bounce House Tabling by Neighborhood Organizations PROGRAMS INCLUDE: Laboratory of Embodied Intelligences Salon 1-2 PM Otis Studio @ 18th Street Arts Center Expert scientists gather to talk about their research in exo-biology and extreme forms of nature. With Moh El-Naggar, Chair of Natural Sciences at USC, and Fathi Karouia, Senior Research Scientist at NASA. This salon is presented as part of Nina Waisman’s Moveable Lab project The Laboratory of Embodied Intelligences. Art-Making Workshop 1-4 PM 18th Street Arts Center Main Gallery In this family-friendly workshop, participants will work with artist Sherin Guirguis to create sculptural forms out of earthen elements, and discuss materiality, activism, culture, and displacement. Music by Flaco 2 PM and 3:30 PM 18th Street Arts Center Main Lot FLACO has been devoted to writing original salsa and Latin music in the studio or on the spot since 2005. Whether on stage or in session, FLACO performs from the heart without question. With band leader Angel Luis Figueroa. Dance Performances 2:30 – 3:30 PM 18th Street Arts Center Main Lot The Cabeza de Vaca Cultural Dance School will perform traditional Mexican and Aztec dances, and the Community Corps Zumba group will perform a series of rocking dance moves – everyone is welcome to join in! Move like a Microbe 3-4 PM 18th Street Arts Center Back Lot Learn about exo-biology while you move your body like a microbe! Join in this participatory, family-friendly workshop with dance-based artist Nina Waisman and her collaborators at the Laboratory for Embodied Intelligence.
