At times, one wishes that the vastly talented songwriter and still-thrilling guitarist Pete Townshend would focus his considerable energy on debuting new material instead of endlessly revisiting his past successes. On the other hand, he’s performing this reworked symphonic rendition of The Who’s 1973 double album Quadrophenia at just four concerts in three cities in the United States. With a sweeping grandeur that evokes the ocean’s stormy tides, this ambitious opus about an alienated mod teen is far more musically expansive and emotionally vulnerable than 1969’s Tommy, Townshend’s previous rock opera. British tenor Alfie Boe reprises Roger Daltrey’s vocal parts as Robert Ziegler conducts a nameless orchestra of local musicians. Townshend will play electric guitar and do some singing, and guest star Billy Idol will substitute for the late Keith Moon on the resigned lower-class lament “Bell Boy.”
