Omar Souleyman was a working-class star in Syria before the internet found him. Embracing the musical and poetic ideas of local Iraqis, Kurds, Turks, Arabs and Syrian Muslims and Christians, Souleyman and his keyboard player Hasan Alo make high-octane, futuristic (but connected to the past) dabke music, or traditional Levant dance music. Souleyman’s electronic dabke spread throughout the world thanks to the internet, and now he tours European festivals. He’s set to embark on a short American tour in support of his new album, To Syria, With Love, which will be put out on Mad Decent Records next month. As the nightmare that is the Syrian civil war draws on, and its refugees continue to be vilified, Souleyman presents a vision of the future that contains multitudes and is always ready to dance.
