If you’re going to be in a tribute band these days, you’ve got to have a good gimmick. Dread Zeppelin were likely one of the first groups to move beyond slavish mimicry of other folks’ music with their reggae versions of Led Zeppelin oldies sung by an Elvis impersonator. More recently, Mac Sabbath have stood out from the endless legions of Black Sabbath wannabes by dressing up those ancient Geezer Butler ditties with sarcastic new lyrics and McDonald’s costumes. Appearing tonight in the flesh (literally) for the first time in nine years, local revisionists Nudist Priest make the pun in their name real by stripping naked to perform Judas Priest covers. It’s not clear what the real Rob Halford would think of these less-than-sculpted bodies, but Golden Rulers singer-guitarist John Ramirez plays it straight with deadpan savagery.
