Rising from the bitter ashes of Joy Division after frontman Ian Curtis hanged himself on the eve of what would have been the English post-punk group’s first American tour, New Order reinvented themselves as a more electronic-based band in the early 1980s, with guitarist-keyboardist Bernard Sumner taking on the role of lead singer. Traces of Joy Division’s angular guitars and propulsive bass lines remained on “Age of Consent,” from 1983’s Power, Corruption & Lies, but New Order soon evolved into a more synth-heavy sound typified by the massive dance hit “Blue Monday.” Founding bassist Peter Hook acrimoniously departed New Order in 2007, but Sumner and company regained much of their previous momentum with the 2015 album Music Complete. British duo Goldfrapp continue to explore varying permutations of electronica and mysticism on their new album, Silver Eye.
