One thing that springs to mind when listening to Colombian salsa singer Mimi Ibarra is how absolutely with-it and together she is when she sings. She’s so calm and collected — when everyone else feels the need to dial it down to 11, Ibarra is so resolutely in charge through the strength of her voice that everything just tends to fade in the background — everything, that is, except that incredibly catchy, lively salsa rhythm. She’s come a long way from her 1994 self-titled record — lots of froofy hair and jackets with many buckles back then — and although she’s also made a name for herself via duets with Tito Rojas on “Duele” and with Anthony Cruz on “No Puede Ser,” she stands alone in the salsa canon as a voice of strength, confidence and, yes, even joy.
