Even when Michael Nesmith was camping it up as one of The Monkees in the mid-’60s, the Houston native was infusing the band’s pop-minded recordings with his own distinctive, occasionally country-tinged originals. Although the singer-guitarist rarely gets as much credit for instigating the country-rock scene as Linda Ronstadt (for whom he wrote her first hit, “Different Drum”) and The Byrds, he nonetheless set the template for popular if less-distinctive groups such as The Eagles and Poco. Nez reunites his First National Band for a rare live performance, and he’ll likely revive such memorable tunes as “Joanne,” as well as “Calico Girlfriend” and “Propinquity (I’ve Just Begun to Care),” two tracks that started as Monkees obscurities before becoming more fully realized with the First National Band. Nesmith performed his final concerts as a Monkee in 2016, so these shows could be the last chance to hear the 75-year-old singer in concert. Also at Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace, Sunday, Jan. 21.
