Home Again, was fresh in its classic, dusty vibe, but it’s on his second album, 2016’s immaculate Love & Hate, that he comes into his own. Suited to the present time but rooted in the past, Kiwanuka’s music was a great fit for Netflix’s series The Get Down, about the origins of hip-hop, for which Nas reworked Love & Hate favorites “Black Man in a White World (Ghetto Gettysburg Address)” and “Rule the World (I Came From the City)” with his own rhymes. Live, Kiwanuka is in his own world. Deeply immersed in the songs, he unexpectedly breaks up the isolation with the most hilarious banter. He’s riveting both ways.
