With the recent passing of drummer Jaki Liebezeit and bassist/soundmeister Holger Czukay, the only remaining founding members of the legendary German avant-rock unit Can are keyboardist/theoretician Irmin Schmidt and the band’s American vocalist Malcolm Mooney. (Guitarist Michael Karoli died in 2001; Stone Age singer Damo Suzuki joined the unit following Mooney’s departure.) Mooney’s infamous surreal stream-of-consciousness rasp is a thing of rough, raw beauty on “You Doo Right,” “Father Cannot Yell,” “Soul Desert,” “The Empress and the Ukraine King” and many other harrowing highlights from the early, heavily experimental Can days. In recent live, primarily spontaneously composed performances with some hard-hitting and musically sympathetic backing players, Mooney has shown every intention of living up to the high exploratory bar set by him and the rest of his groundbreaking German brethren.
