Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith is celebrating the release of her new album, The Kid, a double LP of lush pop created on rare synthesizers that look like spaceship control stations, such as the Buchla Music Easel and the EMS Synthi 100 (of which there is only a handful left in existence). Taking inspiration from the natural world, Smith builds layers of synth melodies that evoke the sublime feeling of being outside in a beautiful setting and receiving some form of enlightened transmission from alien sources. The former lead singer of Brooklyn new wave band Selebrities, opener Maria Usbeck recorded her 2016 solo debut, Amparo, across the span of three years while traveling South America to reconnect with her roots. Sung in Spanish, the songs lace electronic pop with traditional Latin American instruments and field recordings of jungles, birds and the beach.
