“We’re Jodie Foster’s Army!” Brian Brannon announced to the world on JFA’s self-titled origin song, from the Phoenix band’s 1981 debut EP, Blatant Localism. Even though the minutelong ditty is a sarcastic ode to John Hinckley Jr.’s attempt to kill President Ronald Reagan in a far-fetched bid to win the attention of Jodie Foster (“Jodie, dear, for you I’ll kill that louse”), JFA have never been a particularly political band. Instead, Brannon and guitarist Don Pendleton prefer to indulge in the simple pleasures of sidewalk surfing (“Skateboard”), health food (“Cokes and Snickers”) and hanging out in nature (“Beach Blanket Bongout”), alongside the occasional curtly dismissive character sketch about annoying kooks (“Preppy,” “Bouncer”). Pendleton varies all that skate-punk savagery with eloquently shredded covers of surf instrumentals “Walk, Don’t Run” and “Baja.”
