Hot Snakes feature the combined intensity of singer Rick Froberg and guitarist John Reis, who also have performed together in Drive Like Jehu. As Hot Snakes, the San Diego duo crank out an elemental and straightforward version of punk rock that eschews some of the more complicated post-hardcore aspects of Drive Like Jehu. “I need a doctor,” Froberg wails on the opening track of Hot Snakes’ new album, Jericho Sirens (Sub Pop). Such tracks as “Six Wave Hold-Down” and the sinuous “Death Camp Fantasy” are distinguished by Froberg’s vocal desperation aligned with Reis’ hard-driving riffs. Openers Le Butcherettes, led by the ever-provocative vocalist Teri Gender Bender, have a stranger and less predictable style that alternates between punk fury and arty prog-rock passages, such as “Spider/Waves,” in which she insists enigmatically, “Injuries are slashed deep open/Messiahs hold them still.
