Contributors Taz Ahmed, Neelanjana Banerjee, Rachna Khatau, Fawzia Mirza, Nayomi Munaweera and Amita Swandin discuss their new book, Good Girls Marry Doctors: South Asian American Daughters on Obedience and Rebellion. Edited by Tennessee-based writer Piyali Bhattacharya, the essays by dozens of authors, artists, actresses and activists of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan descent – and Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim and Zoroastrian backgrounds – explore the duality of an immigrant upbringing and what it’s like to deviate from cultural expectations, especially as they pertain to sex, marriage, religion, homosexuality and physical abuse. The reading also includes art from Khushboo Kataria Gulati and live music by singer Sri Pachalam.
