There’s always been a connection between humor and mental illness, especially in stand-up. Joleen Lunzer and Andy Erikson, comedians, actresses and writers originally from Minnesota, are two examples. Lunzer has appeared on FOX and BET, and Erikson was a finalist on Last Comic Standing. Lunzer suffers from depression, anxiety and OCD and is a recovering alcoholic, while Erikson has Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder of the connective tissue. Both address their struggles in their acts, and this year they launched a podcast where they not only break down the stigma and myths of their respective illnesses, but interview fellow comics about their own issues (eating disorders, narcolepsy, etc.). For their first live podcast taping, the two – along with co-host and Andy’s husband, Alex Stein – sit down with Debra DiGiovanni, JF Harris and Danielle Perez, who also perform.
