Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile are distinctly different musicians, so what happens when these two self-declared mutual fans combine their powers on the new album Lotta Sea Lice? Australian singer-guitarist Barnett has previously demonstrated a more boldly provocative mix of psychedelic weirdness and punk intensity, whereas Philadelphia singer-guitarist Vile has always had a more studiously low-key approach. The early evidence in the acoustic ballad “Continental Breakfast” indicates that Vile’s laid-back approach is winning out, as he croons in a folksy drawl, “I walk like a bruised ego along shorefront property un-owned to me.” Barnett chimes in with the sweetly consoling rejoinder, “But I’m feelin’ inferior on the interior, don’t ya see?” The guitars are plugged in but still softly jangling on “Over Everything” before culminating in a crescendo of blurry strumming. Also at Desert Daze, Friday, Oct. 13, and the Orpheum, Sunday, Oct. 15.
