The Vietnamese Culture Alliance (VACA) is pleased to unveil Courage to Rebuild, a public art project commemorating the 40th anniversary of Vietnamese immigration to the United States, at a public celebration on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 11AM.
After an international call for artists and jury selection, “Of Two Lineages” by artist James Dinh was selected as the artwork to honor the achievements of the community. “Of Two Lineages” includes a twenty-feet tall bent steel sculpture. The plaza surrounding the sculpture is defined by concrete benches that showcase 100 portraits of Vietnamese Americans, many sourced from UC Irvine's Viet Stories: Vietnamese American Oral History Project. "Of Two Lineages" was inspired by an ancient Vietnamese legend that still resonates in communities today.
At the public unveiling on May 20, artist James Dinh will speak about the inspiration behind the work and Alicia Jao, executive director of VACA, will comment on the project’s significance within the community. Children’s crafts and refreshments will be available. The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend to celebrate the community and Asian American Heritage Month in May.
