The Chambers Brothers’ wildly unlikely saga — going from deep Southern gospel vocal group to Los Angeles psych-rock pioneers — has been marked by one enduring quality: musical excellence. When they first performed at the fabled Ash Grove, the folkies went completely nuts over their soul-stirring harmonizing, but after gospel empress Mahalia Jackson very publicly derided them for performing spirituals where liquor flowed, the siblings opted for a different route. Their epochal 1966 single “Time Has Come Today,” with its groundbreaking lyric “I’ve been crushed by the tumbling tide/And my soul has been psychedelicized,” preceded Love and tied with the 13th Floor Elevators for introducing the P-word to rock & roll. The Chambers Brothers parlayed that infamy into a brilliant run of stomping, soulful workouts — and last brothers standing Willie and Joe, returning to the Ash Grove’s original location (now home to the Hollywood Improv), still conjure it all with magnificent, funky verve.
