The national opioid epidemic, especially heroin and prescription painkillers, has led to rising opioid-related overdoses every year. Zocalo Public Square’s latest lecture, co-organized by UCLA, looks at the causes behind the addiction, as well the effectiveness of alternative approaches, including medical marijuana. Reuters editor Lisa Girion moderates the panel discussion, featuring UCLA law professor Jill Horwitz, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California Benjamin Barron, UCLA Addiction Medicine Clinic director Larissa Mooney and Sam Quinones, author of the book Dreamland: True Tales of America’s Opiate Addiction.
