Buyepongo, Chico Mann & Captain Planet

Buyepongo, Chico Mann & Captain Planet

Edgar Robles

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, KCRW and the Natural History Museum present Buyepongo, the pioneers of “buyangú,” a style that borrows rhythms and beats from cumbia, merengue, punta, jazz and funk. For years the group have been champions of the L.A. Latin scene, while also representing their South L.A. hip-hop influences (“buyepongo” — “to cause a ruckus” — is a shout-out to Wu-Tang Clan’s “Bring Da Ruckus”). Joining Buyepongo are Chico Mann, alter ego of Antibalas guitarist Marcos García, and Captain Planet, DJ and self-described “purveyor of gumbo funk,” a mix of sounds from Brooklyn to Brazil. The DJ lounge will start the party early with KCRW’s Anthony Valadez and Subsuelo, the global bass party crew mixing hip-hop, cumbia and tropical funk textures.
