Brainstory have just released a long-awaited, self-titled mini-album — expertly produced by Chicano Batman’s Eduardo Arenas, whose formidable solo project opens this show — that refines and even redefines their soul-jazz-psychedelic sound. (Their PR makes much of how they rightly think “psychedelic” doesn’t mean much these days, but their music shows there’s still life in the idea.) These five sophisticated songs are the children of Arthur Lee, Shuggie Otis and Caetano Veloso, and second cousins of The Beach Boys — Brainstory’s “Water” flows easily into Surf’s Up — and even Ned Doheny, whose feather-light guitar and rhythm find a friend in Brainstory’s “Evil Cowboy.” Brainstory’s strategy is harmony, melody, agility and elasticity, and the results are smart stuff. With space-funk four-piece Chola Orange.
