How can we miss Black Sabbath when they won’t go away? The venerable British metallurgists have been breaking up and re-forming in various configurations for decades, but they insist that they’ll be splitting up for good following their current two-year series of concerts, fittingly called The End Tour. The truth is, we’re going to miss Sabbath when they’re gone, even if they’re performing these days without original drummer Bill Ward. Frontman Ozzy Osbourne might be better known lately for his chaotic personal life offstage, but he’s a supremely powerful presence on the Rick Rubin–produced 13, the group’s purportedly final studio album. Bassist Geezer Butler’s lyrics are as balefully foreboding as ever, and guitarist Tony Iommi’s wicked sound retains its sting. Sabbath’s distinctively sludgy riffs have inspired virtually every modern grunge and stoner-rock band.
