There’s something uplifting about the fact that Belle and Sebastian, who started out in Glasgow, Scotland, as a deliberately meek, low-key and literary-minded pop outfit, have evolved into such rock stars that they can headline the Hollywood Bowl. Of course, lead singer Stuart Murdoch and gang have adapted their approach over the years. Their most recent album of new material, Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance, moved beyond the restrained folk and chamber pop of the group’s early years with occasional flashes of electronic pop. They should be an interesting match with Spoon, who wander through a tuneful and contemplative variety of art-pop settings on their latest release, Hot Thoughts. Dum Dum Girls’ Dee Dee reinvents herself as Kristin Kontrol, eschewing the garage-punk clangor of her old band for a more overtly glossy synth-pop style.
