Malian singer-guitarist Amadou Bagayoko and his vocalist wife, Mariam Doumbia, are both blind, but together they shape music that is boldly visual and layered with distinctive sonic colors. The mesmerizing way they blend their voices into an ongoing musical conversation over Bagayoko’s sparkling guitar reached its apex on 2004’s Dimanche à Bamako, a collaboration with producer Manu Chao that featured many of the French superstar’s idiosyncratic psychedelic-pop shadings. Since then, Amadou & Mariam have continued to evolve. “Bofou Safou,” from the couple’s upcoming album, La Confusion, mixes their trademark swirling West African rhythms with a disco-funk arrangement that splits the distance between modern Bamako and New York City in the 1970s. It’s their first full-length release since 2012’s Folila, when they rocked up their sound with members of TV on the Radio and Yeah Yeah Yeahs
