http://cap.ucla.edu Located in Westwood, Royce Hall is not only one of the most distinctive buildings on the UCLA campus, it's also one of the key performing-arts venues in the city. The tall, imposing brick theater was constructed in the Italian Romanesque Revival style and finished in 1929. Named after the California philosopher Josiah Royce, the hall includes an E.M. Skinner/Robert Turner pipe organ with more than 6,000 pipes. With its high ceilings and stone walls, Royce Hall's acoustics are best suited for classical and small-band ensembles, but amplified rock bands have also performed here. Over the decades, the theater has hosted everyone from the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra to the Ramones, along with appearances by George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Arnold Schoenberg, Tinariwen, Pacifica Quartet, Marian Anderson, Sparks, Linda Ronstadt, the Jam, Meredith Monk, Twyla Tharp, Earl Scruggs, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Zappa and Mikhail Baryshnikov. The hall has balcony seating on both sides of the main floor, along with a spacious lobby and adjoining cafe. All ages. More >>

  • The Velaslavasay Panorama

    The Velaslavasay Panorama

    1122 W. 24th St. Los Angeles, CA 90007
    213-746-2166

http://www.panoramaonview.org A curious combination of the old and the new, the Velaslavasay Panorama is one of this city's most unusual venues. Located just north of the USC campus, the West Adams space includes a performance hall, theater and garden, all of which are dedicated to reviving the vanishing art of panoramic painting. At one time, such displays, with their large, circular 360-degree landscapes and sound-art effects, were precursors to motion pictures, creating "a complete sensory phenomenon" through the illusion of movement and 3-D depth. These days, the Velaslavasay Panorama uses this venerable art form as a backdrop for live indie-music concerts and avant-garde and experimental exhibitions, as well as more traditional entertainment, such as silent-film screenings and toy-theater productions. For several years, the Panorama was based at the picturesque Tswuun-Tswuun Rotunda in Hollywood before moving in 2005 to its present location at the former Union Theatre in the West Adams district. Featuring exotic and even carnivorous plants like the Venus Flytrap, the current site's back garden is a place where artists and musicians show can how the natural and artistic worlds are blended in a state of "living garden wonder." All ages. Street parking. More >>
