http://www.akbarsilverlake.com Silver Lake's Moroccan-themed gay grotto is a long-running fave, as much for its stiff, reasonably priced drinks as for its vivacious, open-to-all atmosphere. When the adjacent dance room was added a few years ago, it became a full-fledged club. The dark and sweaty pit pumps and pulsates on weekends thanks to dynamic electro/disco mixes from local DJs. Expect a bevy of boho bi and gay grinders in the mix mostly on weekends, and local of all ilks during the week - even crafters (!), who take over with an early gathering every Wednesday. More >>
http://www.alexsbar.com The dim red lights and walls covered from top to bottom with framed portraits of bull fighters and luchadores manages to make Alex's Bar bizarrely lovable. This Long Beach favorite comes equipped with a full bar, pool table, and insanely amusing bathroom wall murals for your enjoyment. Not only does this venue host a slew of talented up-and-coming local musicians on a weekly basis, but it is also used as the set for filming the Fangtasia bar scenes in HBO's True Blood series. Cozy and kitschy with friendly bar service, this place will have your spirits high enough to consider shelling out three bucks to make memories in the custom photo booth hiding at the corner of the bar. http://www.allstarlanesbowling.com All Star Lanes is an iconic Eagle Rock bowling alley, located on Eagle Rock Boulevard. The spacious mid-century interior doesn't look like it's been updated since the day it opened, but it holds 22 lanes for all levels of rollers, plus a bar in the back to keep things lively. There are pool tables and arcade games for the kids, plus the best glow-in-the-dark bowling you'll find anywhere. Lanes run $4/game on weeknights and $6 on weekends, but the cheap drinks ensure you won't end up spending too much. There's also an occasional free comedy show held near the bar, called the 4 & 20 show, which features some of the best comedians working in L.A. today. More >>
http://www.amoeba.com The hangar-size emporium, the sister store to two locations in the Bay Area, has an awe-inspiring selection of music, DVDs and posters and is also the site of free in-store concerts. Solomon Burke, the Flaming Lips, Patti Smith, Paul Westerberg, Neko Case, PJ Harvey, the Raconteurs, Ceci Bastida and Paul McCartney are among the many performers who've played on Amoeba's small stage. The store rests above an underground parking lot, and there's more parking in a small lot just down the block. More >>

http://www.beachfire.com BeachFire is what a neighborhood restaurant should be-a mini-gallery featuring hometown artists (appreciate the colorful boats of Chico Dias), goofy theme nights from Monday Night Football to Aloha Fridays, live bands, kids' specials and booze. Lots of booze. But it's the seafood that ultimately impresses the most-the macadamia-nut-crusted mahi, particularly. More >>

This Glendale mainstay got its name from a giant marlin that hangs on the back wall, surrounded by nautical knickknacks, books, games and dad's-den-like furniture. There's a tiny stage for karaoke, comedy and occasional bands, and a pool table in the middle of the room that's rarely available (regulars seem to like it a lot). From 1966 to 1980, the space was called the Tiger's Den, but the Big Fish, which is a family-owned business, brought a more welcoming feel. Thirty years on, the Fish seems well-anchored, building a community of drinkers, sports fans and bona fide bar buddies. The owners print out a monthly card with an event calendar, a list of "customer birthdays" and even season-appropriate limericks written by the owner's father. More >>
http://www.bigfootlodge.com With wild, woodsy décor, cheap PBR, great DJ nights and a punkish, fun crowd Bigfoot is a lodge for the rock n' roll lush set. Toasted marshallow and cookie drinks, barmaids in girl scout uniforms and kitchsy touches like a giant Smokey the Bear statue, a Sasquatch sign and faux fireplace contribute to the camp-y theme, and the place is popular with vintage car clubs, bikers from the nearby Harley Davidson shop in Glendale and rockabilly types, making for frequent smats of tats, hairgel and red lips, especially on weekends. Hot nights include "Rock n' Roll Karaoke" (a celebration of riff-heavy sounds and bad vox rules Mondays) and "Psychotonic!" Thursdays, a night of trashy retro sounds and vintage film oddities. http://www.bistango.com Bistango is a fusion of fine wine, gourmet food, contemporary art and sophisticated architecture. The candle-lit bar offers a view of a small stage that accommodates R&B, Latin and jazz bands. Well-known for its list of more than 400 wines, Bistango also features a full bar and a modest offering of domestic and imported bottled beers. When dining at Bistango on someone else's account, we suggest the prix fixe. The rotating artwork on display (mostly paintings and sculptures) are available for purchase. More >>
http://www.thebluebeet.com This restaurant is a steak oasis, where the meat is aged for about one week to break down the sinew-making it tender-while being marinated in head chef Jorge Guttierez's secret concoction before being charbroiled to delectability! More >>
http://www.bluecafelive.com A lively spot in downtown Long Beach rocking live music nightly. The Blue Cafe is located in a cavernous building featuring two levels. Down stairs is where the stage is located and local bands play everything from punk to blues. Taps dispense a moderate selection of brews and a bottled selection is available as well. More >>
http://www.bootlegtheater.org Based in a former 1930s warehouse, this brick-walled performance space hosts music, theater, dance and film events in a medium-size theater, which is adjoined by a more bare-bones bar, where indie-rock musicians are booked by the local promoters the Fold. Broken Bells, Joseph Arthur, Joan as Police Woman, the Living Sisters, David Kilgour, LA Font, Cass McCombs, Nicole Eva Emery, Funeral Party, Dan Stuart, Light FM and many other local and international musicians have ensconced themselves in the Bootleg. The beer and wine bar specializes in such bottled beers as La Fin du Monde and Delirium Tremens, alongside tap favorites like Manifesto and Golden Chaos. There's an outdoor patio in the back, surrounded by brick walls decorated with bright murals, where folks can get a breath of fresh air between sets. Shows are generally 21 & over. Street parking.
