http://www.paradisecovemalibu.com In glitzy Malibu, you've got to pay to enjoy the beach. This is certainly true at Paradise Cove Beach Cafe, a seafood restaurant that sits in the sand along a particularly panoramic stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway. You'll pay above-market price for grilled slabs of fresh ahi tuna, and even more for the outlandish Iced Seafood Tower, a looming plate of whole Maine lobster, crabs, jumbo shrimp, salmon, scallops, prawns and more. But that comes with owner Bob Morris' territory. His family has owned most of the cove for more than a half-century, and the $25 parking fees are discounted to just $3 if you spend $20 at the Cafe. So why not pony up for the right to enjoy this slice of secluded sand? When the sun goes down and you've got a platter of seafood in front of you and a rum cocktail in your hand, you start to realize that this particular show has been worth the price of admission. Topanga Community Club

1440 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd. Topanga, CA 90290
    310-455-1980

http://www.topangacommunityclub.com Nestled in the trees on a hilltop halfway up Topanga Canyon, this rustic spread includes the historic Topanga Community House and fairgrounds. The TCC's playing fields are the site of the annual Topanga Days fair, and the indoor clubhouse hosts year-round concerts and a wide variety of organizations and events, including the Topanga Symphony, preschool classes, senior-citizens outreach, Alcoholics Anonymous and the local historical society. Built in 1949 by the Topanga Women's Club, the TCC is one of the few venues for live performance and culture in Topanga Canyon, and it's been a longtime gathering place for people of all ages in the community, as its founders originally intended. The annual Topanga Days festival features several indoor and outdoor stages of popular classic rock, blues, country, roots and folk musicians, many of whom live in the neighborhood, as well as a cornucopia of arts & crafts, retail booths and food stands, all set in a bucolic hillside location. In keeping with Topanga's free-spirited, live-and-let-live philosophy, there's an attitude of communal spirit and hippie-style idealism in this stubbornly pastoral neighborhood. All ages. Parking is available on the premises and along Topanga Canyon Blvd. More >>

  • Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum

    Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum

1419 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd. Topanga, CA 90290
    310-455-3723

http://www.theatricum.com/index.html As a blacklisted actor in the 1950s, Will Geer couldn't find much work in Hollywood, so he put on his own shows at his place in Topanga. But Geer, who'd later go on to portray Grandpa on The Waltons, wasn't exactly performing in his garage. Instead, he built a beautiful midsize outdoor theater that wended its way perfectly into the natural setting, with a gorgeous sylvan backdrop and large oak trees hovering over the wooden stage. Performers often use the trees and nearby hillside as part of the extended stage, and the milieu is shady and relaxing, especially during the summer, when Geer's nonprofit Theatricum Botanicum presents most of its events. The Botanicum is best known for its in-house repertory theater and annual Shakespeare productions, but it's also hosted concerts by such stellar folks as Burl Ives, Della Reese, Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger, as well as many newer young folkies, roots and pop stylists coming out of this hidden corner of Los Angeles. As with the Topanga Community Club across the street, Geer's merry treehouse is a local cultural nexus and one of the few places to hear live performances regularly in the Topanga. All ages. Lot parking. More >>
