http://www.palmsthai.com There may be more chaotic restaurants on a Saturday night, but the new Palms Thai is as loud as they come, a tall box of a dining room, the approximate shape and resonance of a speaker cabinet, lined with ranks of long, straight tables, packed shoulder to shoulder with Singha beer connoisseurs receding into the distance. The food is first-rate. Crisp-skinned Thai sour sausages are served with fried peanuts and raw cabbage; beef jerky is fried to a tooth-wrenching chaw. And Palms Thai prepares the best version in town of suea rong hai, Northeastern-style barbecued beef. You can request a second menu, which includes most of Palms Thai’s best dishes: fiery salads, Isaan-style bar snacks and elaborate soups. But much of the restaurant’s exotica is confined to a third, untranslated menu tucked inside the second one. Keening onstage at the front of the room on weekends is Kavee Thongprecha, the Thai Elvis, who reproduces every moan and hiccup of his idol at respectful but nonetheless ear-stretching volume. Thai Elvis and deep-fried fish maw? What more could you ask from a Saturday night? More >>
http://www.broadwayla.org This Hollywood Art Deco fixture opened in 1930 and has served as a vaudeville performance hall and a cinema, and is currently used for major stage productions. Its elaborate, ornately decorated interior has also hosted concerts from such performers as Bob Dylan, Shakira and the Talking Heads. All ages. More >>
http://www.pignwhistle.com Adjoining the Egyptian Theatre, this landmark Hollywood bar and restaurant features ornately carved wood decor. After opening in 1927, it hosted the first Oscars after-party and was a glittery movie-star hangout before shutting down in the 1950s. After several years of effort, the Pig was brought back to its former style and reopened in 2001. The restaurant is open seven days a week, with live bands in the back room and DJs in the main room. http://www.playhousehollywood.com Elie Samaha (L.A.'s legendary Roxbury, The Green Door) and Rob Vinokur (Crobar NYC, Miami's Goddess) sure weren't playing around when they opened this circus-like megaclub in early 2010. The lighting and production are superlative, as are the live amusements (bartenders and waiters double as performers showcasing talents including aerialist feats and hoop dancing). The best place to watch it all may be the pricey, bozo-and-buxom-babe preferred bottle service tables that line the club's perimeter, but the sightlines are descent pretty much throughout the house. A great sunken dance floor and potent sound system make Playhouse one of the best to see top DJ talents, and the club has got 'em on weekends, and most notably on Mondays (at the long-running electronic dance night, Monday's Social). http://www.myspace.com/relaxbar This east Hollywood bar cranks it up loud with underground metal, hard rock, punk, hardcore and pop-rock bands. The adjoining restaurant serves Thai food, and there's an outdoor smoking patio. Beer & wine. 21 & over. More >>
http://www.clubbang.net With a spacious layout that includes three dance floors and three bars, the Ruby is home to some of the city's liveliest and longest-running dance promotions: Thursday's spanking industrial-dance party Perversion, Friday's mix of multidecade dance dementia called Clockwork Orange and Saturday's electro-indie rock-hipster happening Club Bang! All parties are over 18, so in general this is a youthful romper-stomper with the focus on fashion and hooking up. Its Hollywood Boulevard location does shake up the usual club-kid clientele from time to time, though. Ruby's may not be a popular destination with 30-somethings or above, but for newbie night-hoppers, it's a perpetual pit stop. More >>
http://www.sbe.com/thesayersclub/ The Sayers Club — a relaxed yet elegant hangout essentially hidden behind the Papaya King hot dog stand on Wilcox in Hollywood — attracts a shockingly un-douchey crowd. Credit has to go to the club's conceptual creator and music curator, Jason Scoppa, who also helped turn Bardot above the Avalon into a first-rate spot. But Sayers has a spontaneity and star power that already outshines his previous efforts. Though most nights talented unknowns perform cover hits, surprise big names often take the stage, too, like Prince, Gotye, Nelly Furtado, Sheila E, Questlove and American Idol winner Kris Allen. Even folks like Kristen Stewart and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will join in the party. Ultimately, Sayers is fueled by a love of music, which is why it stays as hot as the dogs that hide its digs. More >>
http://www.space15twenty.com This cluster of Hollywood retail establishments places unique pop-up stores alongside such regular tenants as Urban Outfitters, Umami Burgers, Free People and Hennessey + Ingalls. The multicultural complex is arrayed around an outdoor courtyard that hosts free concerts, film screenings and art exhibits, and it's not unusual to see rising indie-rock stars like Cold Cave and such veterans as Smashing Pumpkins perform surprise shows here. The confluence of so many different retail styles and aesthetic visions helps to bring an interesting cross-section of visitors, and Space 15 Twenty's interconnected walkways and sidewalks make it easy for the casual passerby to drop in spontaneously, whether they're checking out the art books in Hennessey + Ingalls' large, wooden hangar-like structure or shopping for clothes in Urban Outfitters' spacious store. Diners at Umami Burgers, which aspires to serve "fine-dining fast food," can sit inside the restaurant or at open-air tables beside the outdoor stage. Most events are free and all ages.
