http://www.thesmell.org Housed in a funky old storefront, this aptly named downtown club is one of the city's few all-ages live-music venues. Run by a clique of volunteers with a punk-inspired DIY philosophy, the Smell features arty, punky, freaky and experimental indie combos. Most shows are $5. All ages. No booze. No phone. www.thesmell.org More >>
http://www.scr.org The best theater in OC, hands down. Provocative shows like the multi-layered conflict between Midwestern creationism and bicoastal liberal science in How the World Began and the profanity-laden Elemeno Pea really are a nice counter to the high-brow, sophisticated setting of the South Coast Rep. It would be super easy for SCR to play it safe and be totally vanilla, but they don’t, and we love them for it. It's also really affordable for students. Between $5 drinks, and free parking across the bridge at South Coast Plaza (don't be lazy), its mind blowing that a night out with professional live theater can be cheaper than a boring movie date. http://www.space15twenty.com This cluster of Hollywood retail establishments places unique pop-up stores alongside such regular tenants as Urban Outfitters, Umami Burgers, Free People and Hennessey + Ingalls. The multicultural complex is arrayed around an outdoor courtyard that hosts free concerts, film screenings and art exhibits, and it's not unusual to see rising indie-rock stars like Cold Cave and such veterans as Smashing Pumpkins perform surprise shows here. The confluence of so many different retail styles and aesthetic visions helps to bring an interesting cross-section of visitors, and Space 15 Twenty's interconnected walkways and sidewalks make it easy for the casual passerby to drop in spontaneously, whether they're checking out the art books in Hennessey + Ingalls' large, wooden hangar-like structure or shopping for clothes in Urban Outfitters' spacious store. Diners at Umami Burgers, which aspires to serve "fine-dining fast food," can sit inside the restaurant or at open-air tables beside the outdoor stage. Most events are free and all ages. http://www.spaghettini.com If you listen to The Wave radio station, this is that place you keep hearing about. Yes, they still do the Jazz Sunday Brunch with eggs Benedict, fruits and champagne, et al. More >>
http://www.spikes-bar.com By day it's a chill dive bar; by night, this faux-wood-panel and poster-plastered bar and billiards spot revs up the area's rockabilly and greaser scene. Rev It Up is, in fact, the name of the popular Friday night club, a party where the girls often look like Bettie Page and the guys work it Mike Ness-style. Spike's may be popular mostly with those from East L.A. and surrounding areas, but it's worth the drive out to San Gabriel Valley thanks to booker Brando Von Badsville's live music bills, which often mesh garage, punk and psychobilly acts. There's also plenty of new wave (The '80s-themed Breakfast Club) and ska/punk (Radikal's Radio) and goth (Club Vicious) onstage and the tiny dance floor too. These promoter-driven nights do charge a cover, but the pool tables are free and drinks are dirt cheap. Bring cash. More >>
