http://www.vanguardla.com One of L.A.'s most expansive dance floors attracts a world-class roster of turntable wonders (Saturdays), but Vanguard's appeal goes beyond the floor. The outdoor patio, done like Miami-Beach-meets-Asian-oasis, offers a relaxed escape from the throb of the main room, and the red-hued upstairs area is a great place to chill or thrill to separate DJs, not to mention a chance to check out the chaos below via giant windows overlooking the floor. Lasers, video monitors and vibrant lighting throughout make this Hollywood danceteria a mega-experience, whether it's blasting electro rave sounds, hip-hop or crowd-pleaser hits. More >>
http://www.panoramaonview.org A curious combination of the old and the new, the Velaslavasay Panorama is one of this city's most unusual venues. Located just north of the USC campus, the West Adams space includes a performance hall, theater and garden, all of which are dedicated to reviving the vanishing art of panoramic painting. At one time, such displays, with their large, circular 360-degree landscapes and sound-art effects, were precursors to motion pictures, creating "a complete sensory phenomenon" through the illusion of movement and 3-D depth. These days, the Velaslavasay Panorama uses this venerable art form as a backdrop for live indie-music concerts and avant-garde and experimental exhibitions, as well as more traditional entertainment, such as silent-film screenings and toy-theater productions. For several years, the Panorama was based at the picturesque Tswuun-Tswuun Rotunda in Hollywood before moving in 2005 to its present location at the former Union Theatre in the West Adams district. Featuring exotic and even carnivorous plants like the Venus Flytrap, the current site's back garden is a place where artists and musicians show can how the natural and artistic worlds are blended in a state of "living garden wonder." All ages. Street parking. More >>
Formerly known as Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre when it opened in 1981, this large outdoor venue in Irvine, Orange County, features traditional theater seating up front and lawn seating on the hill overlooking the amphitheater. It's currently the home of the Pacific Symphony and the annual site of the KROQ Weenie Roast. Performers who've played here include Michael Jackson, Social Distortion, Ozzy Osbourne and The Offspring. More >>
http://www.vermontrestaurantonline.com Anchoring the commercial corridor of Vermont Avenue north of Sunset, Vermont (always lowercase) is like a stalwart, reliable friend. The owners often wander through the dining room, with its palmettos and pillars and gentle lighting, and they always like to chat. You may not be bowled over by anything you eat, but you'll be back. Plus, the stylish bar is one of the neighborhood's few upscale spots for cocktails. More >>

http://www.vientoyaguacoffeehouse.com Viento Y Agua is one of those brilliant gems that make an urban neighborhood (especially in LA County) worth living in. Part coffeshop/art gallery/music venue/and restaurant, Viento Y Agua still manages to exude a down-to-earth vibe amongst the cultural clutter and local art exhibited on its walls. At nights a small stage comes to life, showcasing local musicians doing free concerts that make the famous Mexican mochas taste even better. Small enough to feel like home, but large enough so you won't get claustrophobic, you'll find yourself among Long Beach locals, from students to unemployed philosophers, all enjoying a great cup of coffee. http://www.viperroom.com Although the Viper Room is no longer owned by actor Johnny Depp, the West Hollywood nightclub remains a popular destination on the Sunset Strip for both live-music fans and starstruck tourists alike. Depp and his partners took over the longtime bar the Central in 1993, refurbishing it with a sleek, black interior, and renamed it the Viper Room. When it first opened, the club pulled in many of Depp's celebrity pals, ranging from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Counting Crows (whose singer, Adam Duritz, briefly toiled as its bartender) to Cher, Jennifer Aniston, the Pogues' Shane Macgowan and, sadly, River Phoenix, who died outside the room on Halloween. There are still occasional celebrity sightings at the Viper Room, which is currently owned by Pink Taco CEO Harry Morton, but the club is now more of a hangout for indie and hard-rock bands. When it gets too crowded in the upstairs main room, clubgoers can repair to the more-intimate downstairs lounge, where acoustic singer-songwriters strum and warble confessional ballads. Both rooms feature full bars. Ages 21 & over. More >>
