http://www.scfta.org Segerstrom Center for the Arts is unique as both an acclaimed arts institution and as a multi-disciplinary cultural campus. To put it bluntly, it’s the classiest venue in the whole damn County. Previously called the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Segerstrom Center traces its roots back to the late 1960s when a dedicated group of community leaders decided Orange County should have its own world-class performing arts venue which brings in national ballet and theater companies. In addition to the 3,000-seat Segerstrom Hall and intimate 250-seat Founders Hall, which opened in 1986, and the 2,000-seat Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall (opened in 2006) also houses the 500-seat Samueli Theater, the Lawrence and Kristina Dodge Education Center’s studio performance space and Boeing Education Lab. Home to newer institutions like the Off Center Festival that manage to bring in the coveted 25 and under crowd, the center has come a long way towards making this upscale culture palace a place for everyone to enjoy. http://www.sevengrand.la Located in the historic part of downtown on the second floor of a grand old building on Grand Street, this venerable whiskey bar has the look and feel of a classic hunting lodge. Outdoorsy tableaux and the skeletons of various animals are spotlighted in glass, museum-style display cases, and the bar's high walls are mounted with more than a dozen deer-head trophies and other taxidermy specimens. The hunting motif continues with fox-and-hound-patterned wallpaper and a row of fanciful lamps that sprout with the antlers of mythical jackalopes. The Irish bar boasts more than 265 brands of whiskey and bourbon, and the joint encompasses a large room with a pool table that's reportedly 150 years old, as well as smaller, more intimate lounge areas. In keeping with Seven Grand's vintage aesthetic, live jazz and blues groups perform Monday through Wednesday, along with traditional Celtic folk combos, but local indie-pop bands occasionally sit in, bringing an air of contrasting modernity. The dress code is formal, with shorts, flip-flops and "overly baggy" pants not allowed. More >>
On weekends and hot DJ nights (Wednesdays and Thursdays) there is literally a line down the block to get into this popular Echo Park bar (named for its proximity of Dodger Stadium), and for the most part it's worth the wait. The red-hued dance room feels like a bonafide dance club, but the place is always free and filled with hip yet friendly local boogie-ers and barhoppers. There's a great pool table area, a black & white photo booth that's extra brightly lit and thereby makes everyone look good, and a guy often selling $1 tamales near the door (the ubiquitous bacon-wrapped hot dog vendors are always outside too). It might be a scenester circus, but the Short Stop's also made a point of keeping around reminders of the day when it was a popular policeman hangout: memorabilia like billyclub parts, badges, patches and gun lockers, and a bounty of bullet holes behind the bar and in the front door. http://www.thesilverlakelounge.com For many years, this longtime Silver Lake bar has presented transgender Latino shows. The cozy, narrow bar is dark, the small stage is low, and the sound system is basic, but the club's iconic neon "Salvation" sign has beckoned adventurous groups for more than a decade, including Metric, Nellie McKay, Les Baton Rouge, Wye Oak, Liz Pappademas and Mr. Gnome. Indie-rock promoters the Fold were based here for many years before giving away to other booking agents. Seating is available at the bar and on a long bench along the wall, with Chinese lanterns giving the dimly lit room a little bit of festive color. Full bar. Ages 21 & over. Parking available in a small adjoining lot and on the street. More >>
