http://www.facebook.com/RhinoRecordsPopUp In what one hopes will be an annual tradition, the much-missed Rhino Records emporium in Westwood has been reincarnating itself as a pop-up store for the past two years at sites close to its classic old location. The store will be open for just a few more weeks, with Rhino hosting daily in-house concerts by rising indie-rock, garage and power-pop stars mixed with beloved favorites from the punk, folk and Paisley Underground past. Among the musicians who've already popped up at the store this year are the Bangles' Vicki Peterson, Avi Buffalo, Little Willie G, Evie Sands, the Muffs, Billy Vera, Thelonious Monster, the Lions, Kristian Hoffman, the Ruby Friedman Orchestra, and unexpected reunions of the Crawdaddys and the Balancing Act. Executive producer Gary Stewart and his volunteer crew are constantly adding surprise guests to previously booked bills, making each day a unique event and this humble Westside storefront the temporary center of the local club scene. This year, the concerts are held in a separate room with a real stage, good sound and a pro lighting system, which makes this part of the store feel like a real nightclub. The rest of the store, of course, features thousands of Rhino releases, DVDs, cutouts, rare LPs and CDs, posters and out-of-print bargains. The unusual nature of this event seems to attract both the hippest indie scenester and legendary hermits who haven't performed onstage in years, and you never know who might be browsing through the stack of albums next to you. All ages. Street parking. More >>
http://www.rhythm-lounge.com In its second-floor perch in downtown Long Beach, the large, concrete-floored, utilitarian space draws a largely African-American clientele, and hosts comics who poke fun at life's grittier experiences. (Look for comedienne D.D. Rainbow, who mixes the bitter with the sweet when she riffs on her father's experiences with dementia.) The full bar serves up stiff drinks and a modest selection of draft beers including the ever-delicious wheat ale, Blue Moon. More >>
With walls cluttered with signs and other memorabilia celebrating the New York Yankees, Rick's Tavern on the Main can feel like a like a little bit of the Bronx on the south side of Santa Monica. Even the bar's black-&-white checkerboard-patterned floor reflects the baseball team's colors. The place is obviously a big-time sports bar, with several large screens blasting the games, but many of the locals drop by just for Rick's weekly burger nights. And, unlike many of the trendy bars along this stretch of Santa Monica, Rick's is unpretentious, casual and down to earth. With a sister bar in Amsterdam, you could even say that Rick's has a little bit of a Dutch flavor. The full bar also includes a patio for hanging out on warm days. The kitchen serves basic bar favorites like waffle fries, vegetarian chili, potato skins and burgers. Ages 21 & over. Street parking. More >>
http://www.rockwell-la.com How many lounges are there in Hollywood? You may as well ask how many grains of sand lie along the shore? But Rockwell, the sister of Los Feliz perennial Vermont, is actually a comfortable place to spend an evening, a highly architected space hidden off an alley where it is all but impossible to tell under the low lights what part of the dining room is inside and which is out, where the cocktail you have just been handed is a Lovely Pear or an oddball tincture of cucumber, or whether the couple two booths over is making out or just playing a spirited game of checkers. If you've dined after 11 anywhere near this zip code, you probably know what is going to end up on your plate, but the flatbread made with Spanish chorizo is a nice touch, the chicken is beautifully fried, and the truffled goat cheese ravioli taste a lot like truffles and goat, which has to be considered a victory under the circumstances. Roasted pineapple parfait? You don't have to ask us twice. More >>
http://www.room5lounge.com You've almost certainly caught a glimpse of the glowing Amalfi Ristorante signage as you cruised up La Brea towards the thumping Hollywood clubs on some random Saturday night. But just upstairs is Room 5 Lounge, a compact music space with lots of soul. It also happens to have plenty to drink, thanks to the large bar downstairs. You can sip from the well if you're not feeling particularly pricey, or reach for the top shelf if the weekend music moves you – and do it all from the comfort of an overstuffed chair. Candles will dance as you snack on wood-fired salami and rapini pizzas or a creamy risotto with lamb medallions, and you'll find yourself nodding along to the slow strumming of an acoustic guitar from the next great musician you haven't heard of yet. Or make it a point to swing by once a month for the place's Opera on Tap series, which offers first-class arias from some of the city's best singers, at below balcony prices. More >>
http://www.theroxyonsunset.com Since its opening in 1973, the Sunset Strip nightclub has presented a stellar array of musicians, comedians and theatrical revues, including Neil Young, Bob Marley, Rickie Lee Jones, Chuck Berry, Genesis, Bruce Springsteen, Miles Davis, David Bowie, the Clash, Prince, the Replacements, the Pharcyde, Jane's Addiction, Dolly Parton, the Dead Weather, the Dickies, Cobra Verde, Nellie McKay, the Ringling Sisters, Nirvana, the Sex Pistols, Pee-Wee Herman and the American theatrical debut of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The Ramones filmed the concert scenes for Rock & Roll High School here, and Van Morrison, Social Distortion and Warren Zevon are among the notable personalities who've recorded live albums in the West Hollywood club. Apart from a full-service bar, the main room and its dark walls (which feature photos of past performers) are austere and functional instead of lavishly decorated, but that's because the focus is on the musicians onstage. The adjoining upstairs lounge On the Rox hosts parties, DJs and live performances and has been the site of numerous celebrity sightings, going back to John Lennon's and Harry Nilsson's notorious lost weekend in the mid-1970s. Both venues are all ages with separate full bars. More >>
http://www.clubbang.net With a spacious layout that includes three dance floors and three bars, the Ruby is home to some of the city's liveliest and longest-running dance promotions: Thursday's spanking industrial-dance party Perversion, Friday's mix of multidecade dance dementia called Clockwork Orange and Saturday's electro-indie rock-hipster happening Club Bang! All parties are over 18, so in general this is a youthful romper-stomper with the focus on fashion and hooking up. Its Hollywood Boulevard location does shake up the usual club-kid clientele from time to time, though. Ruby's may not be a popular destination with 30-somethings or above, but for newbie night-hoppers, it's a perpetual pit stop. More >>
