  • Grammy Museum

    Grammy Museum

800 W. Olympic Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90015
    213-765-6800

http://www.grammymuseum.org Housed in downtown's upscale L.A Live mall, this multistory museum doesn't appear to be very rock & roll on the surface, but it does boast a variety of permanent and traveling exhibits. While the focus is largely on mainstream figures in rock, pop, R&B, country and jazz, the venue also hosts regular performances in which celebrity musicians perform a few tunes and discuss their craft with an audience Q&A. • Grand Star Jazz Club

    Grand Star Jazz Club

    943 N. Broadway Los Angeles, CA 90012
    213-626-2285

http://www.grandstarjazzclub.com A family-owned business in Chinatown dating back to 1946, Grand Star hosts some wild dance-party happenings. The former Chinese restaurant's relaxed, almost-underground atmosphere works for just about any promotion that goes down here on weekends, from sweaty hip-hop ragers like "Boombox" to sexy disco soirees like "Full Frontal." Jazz bands and karaoke fill up the weeknight schedule. The miniature Saturday Night Fever-like light-up dance floor definitely enhances retro-themed events, while the alley location gives Grand Star a charm pretty much unmatched in club venues in Chinatown or anywhere. The nightclub is nestled in a picturesque Chinatown plaza on Broadway, just steps away from the old Hong Kong Cafe, among the brightly painted buildings that are clustered around a festive courtyard festooned with red Chinese hanging lanterns. The bar has a long, storied history and was once a favorite hangout for the legendary Mexican comedian Cantinflas and his friends. More >>

  • Great Park

    Great Park

Sand Canyon Ave. Irvine, CA 92618
    949-724-6247

http://www.ocgp.org For all the manicured sterility that exists in Irvine’s expensive crown jewel known as the Great Park, there’s plenty of flavor to be found if you look hard enough at the concert schedule. As the warm weather increases, so do the chances of catching everything from classically-trained composers to Salsa dancers twirling to Poncho Sanchez and punk rock soirees like the Warped Tour, all taking place in a giant sprawl of lawn or at the Palm Courts Arts Complex. Plans to bring in a Goldenvoice event to the park have been in thr works for years now. When that happens, get ready for the official re-birth of what will easily be the hippest place in Irvine. • The Greek Theatre

    The Greek Theatre

2700 N. Vermont Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-665-5857

http://www.greektheatrela.com Nestled in a tree-lined Los Feliz canyon in Griffith Park at the base of a hill that leads up to Griffith Observatory, the Greek Theatre is one of Los Angeles' most popular and enduring open-air amphitheaters. With a seating capacity of 5800, the Greek is more intimate than the Hollywood Bowl, and it has better sound than most local outdoor venues. Designed by architect Frederick Heath and paid for by the controversial industrialist (and Griffith Park namesake) Griffith J. Griffith, the amphitheater opened in 1929, hosting seasonal summer concerts and Broadway shows. Because the Greek is part of Griffith Park, it's owned by the City of Los Angeles, but it's managed by the local promoters Nederlander-Greek Inc. The venue has been the site of many famous concerts, including Neil Diamond's 1972 live album, Hot August Nights. (It was also the setting for the 2010 comedy Get Him to the Greek.) Diamond was among the first to salute "the tree people," the unofficial designation for those folks who listen to concerts for free on a hillside just outside the Greek's back gate. Over the years, Neil Young, the Pretenders, the White Stripes, the Talking Heads, the B-52's, Cat Power, Paul Simon, Neko Case, Ringo Starr, Elton John, the Sex Pistols, Alison Krauss, the Screaming Trees, Youssou N'Dour, the Go-Go's, Florence & the Machine, Robert Plant and many other celebs have performed under the stars in this decidedly laid-back setting. The Greek has several full bars and food concessions, and the adjoining space called the Redwoods is a sylvan environment for pre-show parties and mixers. Most of the available parking is stacked parking on the surrounding grass fields, but preferential parking (with easier access) is also available for a higher price. All ages. More >>

  • Guatelinda

    Guatelinda

4916 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-666-7070

Longtime Hollywood clubgoers who've grown sick of the usual velvet rope scene have been known to venture eastward. And when they do, they're usually swallowed up by Guatelinda, a multifaceted club space next to the Barnsdall Art Park. To say that Guatelinda is a throwback, you'd first have to figure out where the tinsel-fueled, string lights monstrosity came from -- or how it's stayed open so long. The truth is, beyond the routine $10 door charge is a wonderland of diverse dancers and cheaply made stiff drinks, all the better for a dim night of grinding to whatever reggaeton/alt-disco/electronic the rotating DJ happens to have on. The crowd spans the gamut from low key locals to wild-eyed club commuters from deep in the Valley, particularly at the recurring Club Called Rhonda parties, where underground DJ couture meets alleyway chic. All with mandatory Jell-O shots. More >>
