This Glendale mainstay got its name from a giant marlin that hangs on the back wall, surrounded by nautical knickknacks, books, games and dad's-den-like furniture. There's a tiny stage for karaoke, comedy and occasional bands, and a pool table in the middle of the room that's rarely available (regulars seem to like it a lot). From 1966 to 1980, the space was called the Tiger's Den, but the Big Fish, which is a family-owned business, brought a more welcoming feel. Thirty years on, the Fish seems well-anchored, building a community of drinkers, sports fans and bona fide bar buddies. The owners print out a monthly card with an event calendar, a list of "customer birthdays" and even season-appropriate limericks written by the owner's father. More >>
http://www.bigfootlodge.com With wild, woodsy décor, cheap PBR, great DJ nights and a punkish, fun crowd Bigfoot is a lodge for the rock n' roll lush set. Toasted marshallow and cookie drinks, barmaids in girl scout uniforms and kitchsy touches like a giant Smokey the Bear statue, a Sasquatch sign and faux fireplace contribute to the camp-y theme, and the place is popular with vintage car clubs, bikers from the nearby Harley Davidson shop in Glendale and rockabilly types, making for frequent smats of tats, hairgel and red lips, especially on weekends. Hot nights include "Rock n' Roll Karaoke" (a celebration of riff-heavy sounds and bad vox rules Mondays) and "Psychotonic!" Thursdays, a night of trashy retro sounds and vintage film oddities. http://www.bistango.com Bistango is a fusion of fine wine, gourmet food, contemporary art and sophisticated architecture. The candle-lit bar offers a view of a small stage that accommodates R&B, Latin and jazz bands. Well-known for its list of more than 400 wines, Bistango also features a full bar and a modest offering of domestic and imported bottled beers. When dining at Bistango on someone else's account, we suggest the prix fixe. The rotating artwork on display (mostly paintings and sculptures) are available for purchase. More >>
http://www.theblumonkey.com Long cushioned benches lined with plush pillows, Morroccan-influenced decorations, and mosque-shaped hanging lights make Blu Monkey Bar & Lounge look as if it is a hookah bar. Despite the lack of hookahs, the vibe is laid-back. Speedy bartenders and good DJs keep customers happy and the dance floor full. Unpretentious, but still crowded, the Blu Monkey is a good place to chill with good friends. More >>
http://www.thebluebeet.com This restaurant is a steak oasis, where the meat is aged for about one week to break down the sinew-making it tender-while being marinated in head chef Jorge Guttierez's secret concoction before being charbroiled to delectability! More >>
http://www.bluecafelive.com A lively spot in downtown Long Beach rocking live music nightly. The Blue Cafe is located in a cavernous building featuring two levels. Down stairs is where the stage is located and local bands play everything from punk to blues. Taps dispense a moderate selection of brews and a bottled selection is available as well. More >>
Located in the industrial district on the edge of downtown L.A., Blue Star Cafe closes its kitchen after the lunch rush; that's when owner Kash Brouillet hands his diner over to the local punk-rock scene. From there, music is played on an outdoor stage that resembles someone’s backyard, movies get shown indoors, and beer and libations can be had for all at this downtown hidden gem. More >>
http://www.bluewhalemusic.com If the true art of jazz is improvisation, it makes sense that Little Tokyo's Blue Whale jazz club seems to pop up out of nowhere. The in-the-moment space atop Weller Court is a dim mix of modern lines and classic looks, much like the genre-mixing music that emerges nightly from the open stage. The eclectic audience queues up at the bar in the back, or slumps into one of the many padded benches that surround the impeccable performers. For those in need of satiation, the small kitchen churns out top-notch small plates Tuesday through Saturday, from an early tomato polenta to a series of pulled pork sliders. The house cocktails and small collection of local craft beers keep everyone tapping their feet to the sometimes bluesy tunes that emerge from the best jazz players in the country. More >>
http://www.boardners.com With one of the richest histories of any bar in Los Angeles (it's said to be the last place where Elizabeth Short drank before she stepped into the night and became the Black Dahlia), this "Hollywood legend since 1942"; as touted on the Web site; has definitely gone through different guises over the years. (It was a hot, heavy metal scene hang in the '80s.) But it didn't realize its full splendor until owner Tricia La Belle took over a little more than a decade ago, refurbishing the bar area and embellishing the adjacent dance room with gothic touches, as well giving the outdoor patio a New Orleans-style feel, perfect for the dark and decadent entertainment on weekends and the young, hip hordes who frequent midweek. http://www.bootlegtheater.org Based in a former 1930s warehouse, this brick-walled performance space hosts music, theater, dance and film events in a medium-size theater, which is adjoined by a more bare-bones bar, where indie-rock musicians are booked by the local promoters the Fold. Broken Bells, Joseph Arthur, Joan as Police Woman, the Living Sisters, David Kilgour, LA Font, Cass McCombs, Nicole Eva Emery, Funeral Party, Dan Stuart, Light FM and many other local and international musicians have ensconced themselves in the Bootleg. The beer and wine bar specializes in such bottled beers as La Fin du Monde and Delirium Tremens, alongside tap favorites like Manifesto and Golden Chaos. There's an outdoor patio in the back, surrounded by brick walls decorated with bright murals, where folks can get a breath of fresh air between sets. Shows are generally 21 & over. Street parking.
