    The Airliner

    2419 N. Broadway Los Angeles, CA 90031
    323-221-0771

http://www.theairlinerla.com This Eastside club takes flight several nights a week, offering gritty ambiance and great sounds. Some might call it a dive - albeit a very big, multilevel one - due to the sometimes sketchy scene outside, but its unfettered charm is well-suited to the raw sounds within. Inside, the vibe is friendly and totally unpretentious, with peeps seemingly more concerned about the musical offerings than with being seen. Rowdy live bands and rappers rouse the outdoor patio stage, and bangin' DJs fill up the big dance floor inside. More >>

  • Akbar

    Akbar

4356 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90029
    323-665-6810

http://www.akbarsilverlake.com Silver Lake's Moroccan-themed gay grotto is a long-running fave, as much for its stiff, reasonably priced drinks as for its vivacious, open-to-all atmosphere. When the adjacent dance room was added a few years ago, it became a full-fledged club. The dark and sweaty pit pumps and pulsates on weekends thanks to dynamic electro/disco mixes from local DJs. Expect a bevy of boho bi and gay grinders in the mix mostly on weekends, and local of all ilks during the week - even crafters (!), who take over with an early gathering every Wednesday. More >>

    Alex's Bar

2913 E. Anaheim St. Long Beach, CA 90804
    562-434-8292

http://www.alexsbar.com The dim red lights and walls covered from top to bottom with framed portraits of bull fighters and luchadores manages to make Alex's Bar bizarrely lovable. This Long Beach favorite comes equipped with a full bar, pool table, and insanely amusing bathroom wall murals for your enjoyment. Not only does this venue host a slew of talented up-and-coming local musicians on a weekly basis, but it is also used as the set for filming the Fangtasia bar scenes in HBO's True Blood series. Cozy and kitschy with friendly bar service, this place will have your spirits high enough to consider shelling out three bucks to make memories in the custom photo booth hiding at the corner of the bar. Alpine Village

    833 W. Torrance Blvd. Torrance, CA 90502
    310-327-4384

http://www.alpinevillagecenter.com Whether it’s the always-lively beer garden, the quaint shops that sell lederhosen and dirndls or the market and deli that specialize in European imports, even kitsch-phobic snobs have to succumb to Alpine Village’s faux Bavarian charm. They especially can’t deny its status as the largest host of Oktoberfest in L.A. (the website even has a daily countdown to that special time of year), which can get as rowdy as a soccer hooligan fight. The village stages other big celebrations throughout the year, from classic car shows to Mardi Gras. Whatever the occasion, revelers can count on fifteen beers on tap and good German and Eastern European grub. Offerings include pub snacks like giant pretzels and sausages in the oompah-blaring beer hall and classier fare, like plates of stuffed cabbage, wienerschnitzel and goulash in the two-level Alpine Village Inn restaurant, which is where you’ll find senior couples dancing the waltz, cha-cha or foxtrot. Don’t laugh. They know how to have a good time. More >>

    Amoeba Music

http://www.amoeba.com The hangar-size emporium, the sister store to two locations in the Bay Area, has an awe-inspiring selection of music, DVDs and posters and is also the site of free in-store concerts. Solomon Burke, the Flaming Lips, Patti Smith, Paul Westerberg, Neko Case, PJ Harvey, the Raconteurs, Ceci Bastida and Paul McCartney are among the many performers who've played on Amoeba's small stage. The store rests above an underground parking lot, and there's more parking in a small lot just down the block. More >>
