http://www.pollys.com Polly's Coffee is a slice of Northern Europe plunked down into the set of Prairie Home Companion, by way of Vermont. This place doesn't fool around when it comes to a cuppa java. The woody, homespun interior features an imported German Probat LNIS coffee roaster, which can roast up to 30 pounds of beans at a time. Polly's also has comfortable make-yourself-at-home seating - including a semi-enclosed outdoor area - and the staff are friendly and accommodating. If you're in Long Beach and want a vibe that's sorta Larchmont-meets-Montana Avenue-meets-Sherman-Oaks, look for Polly's at the west end of 2nd Street's busy, fun retail/food strip. You'll feel right at home - assuming "home" is a small town in Northern Wisconsin. More >>
http://www.portfoliocoffeehouse.com Though there's no alcohol served-wait! Keep reading!-this stylish and quaint coffeehouse is a perfect little spot for those looking to relax, make use of the computers available or get some work done on their own laptop. Although Fridays and Saturdays usually involve live music, Wednesdays are especially entertaining thanks to open-mic night when anyone itching for the spotlight can sign up for his/her 15 minutes of fame. Bonus: Portfolio serves the best Mexican hot chocolate this side of the border. More >>
http://www.starbucks.com Since its founding by a trio of aspiring coffee roasters in Seattle in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse in the world, with upwards of 20,000 locations in Los Angeles and around the world. Named for the chief mate on the whaling ship from Moby Dick, the company didn't begin chasing the Great White Whale of world java domination until the 1990s, by which time it was opening a new store every day. A turbulent economy has since forced it to retrench, but the chain remains a powerhouse both commercially and politically, thanks to its op-ed-penning chairman, Howard Schultz. A purveyor of whole foods, Starbucks typically farms out its secret recipes to a single, Starbucks-owned bakery in each city, and now sells a good deal of its coffee beans at grocery stores. http://www.storiesla.com This homey, down-home new-&-used bookstore and gift shop is wrapped like a heart around a cute little cafe, which dishes out coffee, hummus, pita bread and other snacks. Nestled in a row of simpatico establishments in Echo Park, the shop is not only "a place to hear up-and-coming authors read from their latest opuses," it's also "a place where you can use the word 'opus' ironically, or not!" Book signings, readings and kids' events often feature live folk, indie and country music from stellar locals, who perform on the back patio by a colorful mural. All ages. More >>
This cozy little Culver City cafe is a quintessential Westside joint, even down to the colorfully painted surfboards that line the walls. With free Wi-Fi and a relaxed atmosphere, Tanner's is more of a pleasant hangout than an obsessed foodie's destination. However, the selection of coffees and teas are extensive, and the staff is renowned for their friendly, down-home vibe. The walls are brightly colored, and the large windows let in plenty of sunlight, giving the place a bucolic, almost tropical feel. There are also seats on the sidewalk and outdoor patio for those who want to soak up the California sun and work on their screenplays and Great American Novels. Unlike many coffee bars, Tanner's has an unhurried pace, and visitors are invited to stay as long as they wish. No alcohol. All ages. Street parking, plus there's a free two-hour lot in the back.
