  • Cafe De Leche

    Cafe De Leche

5000 York Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90042
    323-551-6828

http://www.cafedeleche.net Look past the hype and hipsters who are loyal to their skinny bones, and you’ll find that Café de Leche in Highland Park attracts customers from all over, who swear by this coffee shop's horchata con espresso, or maybe its Mexican mocha or agave latte. There's also a list of “classicos,” like cappuccinos, macchiattos and iced drinks. But rather than pair your hot (or cold) cup of java with pastries, try the planchita, Romanian flatbread stuffed with different fillings. (If you’re looking for a proper meal, owners Matt and Anya Schodorf also run a sandwich and salad spot, Schodorf’s Luncheonette, just down the street.) This is a mom-and-pop coffee shop that, like many, doubles as a community hub. So instead of laptop-ing, try perusing the stack of travel books or local art on the walls – especially the suspended orange bicycle – or the piles of flyers advertising neighborhood gigs. As if Eastsiders needed more reasons to keep it local. — Siran Babayan More >>

  • Cafe Tropical

    Cafe Tropical

2900 W. Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90026
    323-661-8391

Cuban sandwiches, those divine, decidedly unkosher concoctions of ham, roast pork, cheese, pickles and mojo pressed flat on lengths of French bread, are among the greatest things ever to come out of a sandwich press. In the right neighborhoods of Tampa and Miami, you can find two or three Cuban sandwich places on every block. In Los Angeles, you can find pretty good versions at all the usual Cuban restaurants - including Rincon Criollo, Versailles and El Colmao, among others - but a Cuban sandwich, as well as its cousin the medianoche, is something best consumed bellied up to a counter with a frothing glass of juice or a bottle of malta close to hand. Which brings us, as always, to the venerable Café Tropical in Silver Lake, which has become a little more upscale in the last few years, but which still serves a formidable Cuban, juicy and garlicky and lacquered with pickles. And the Cuban coffee is remarkable too. More >>

    Cafecito Organico

710 N. Heliotrope Drive Los Angeles, CA 90029
    213-305-4484

http://www.cafecitoorganico.com Cafecito Orgánico, the coffee shop and roastery that began life as a farmers market stall and once operated out of a back room of Mama's Hot Tamales near MacArthur Park, is expanding. Not like a little expansion, but the kind of proliferation suggesting that everybody needs access to higher-quality caffeine. Angel Orozco and Mitch Hale have partnered with designer John M. Sofio (the Beverly, Pink Taco Sunset) to open two Malibu locations in recent years, with additional locations in downtown L.A., Burbank, Echo Park, Venice, Pasadena, Torrance and Orange County now also open or on the way. As it expands, Cafecito Organico can’t help but lose some of its mom-and-pop charm, but the brand's signature skeleton imagery and Hecho a mano window decals painted by artist Julio Turuno make even the newer locations feel less like a Starbucks and more like the beloved, community-drive coffee chain that it really is. http://www.chafortea.com Liquid refreshment makes up most of the extensive menu at Cha for Tea, and the high point may be the lilac-hued, creamy taro-milk tea. Even the food at Cha features notes of tea. The subtle tea-flavored minced pork and the tender, stew-like, tea-flavored beef are served with your choice of rice, egg noodles, or salad, and two sides of the day. More >>

http://www.coffeebean.com Founded in Brentwood, California in 1963, the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is a true coffee and tea joint that focuses on hot drinks and not on sweets and pastries. Nonfat and soy-derived flavors are emphasized, signature decafs like Tropical Passion and Swedish Berries are brewed daily, and this may be the only place in Los Angeles where one can order a Strawberries and Cream Tea Latte straight off the daily menu, which is filled with the usual chocolate- and caramel-infused teas and coffees besides. The company brags about its close relationships with private farms and plantations, and after five decades of growth is the nation's largest privately held specialty coffee and tea retailer. • Coffee Commissary

    Coffee Commissary

801 Fairfax Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90046
    323-782-1465

http://www.coffeecommissary.com Four dollars for a cup of coffee? At this West Hollywood coffee shop, yes. But before you spit out your Starbucks, hear us out: There's a revolution going on in the java world that has little to do with the over-barbecued cafe loco you're used to and everything to do with small organic farms in South America that are churning out product with the kind of terroir previously associated only with wine. Now, we're not so sure about hints of chocolate and pomegranate in our perfect, 195-degree cup of Commissary joe, but it is super smooth and low on acid. Props to Intelligentsia Coffee for kickstarting this thing in L.A. But what we like about the two-year-old Coffee Commissary is that it's simple, casual and gimmick-free. Nobody's slurping and "cupping" this stuff, and you won't be huffed on if you don't know your Coava from your Victrola. Hot water is swirled over a cone of precious grinds, with the resulting brew transferred to a thick mug. That's it. More >>
