http://www.thecornerdoorla.com There are some things to like here: grilled corn with brown butter and smoky chile; grilled asparagus with cilantro pesto, a mound of burrata and a crispy fried egg. Both end up being more satisfying that the underwhelming burger. The cider-glazed wings aren't bad either, char-grilled and covered in a sticky-sweet sauce that tastes like something you'd find at an Americanized Chinese restaurant. Plenty of drinkers have emerged from the phone-booth sized Harbor Room in Playa Del Rey, fortified by the strong drinks and feeling like they can save the world. The next door Italian joint has seen that look many times, which is why they stay stocked with starchy pasta and plenty of red sauce to ward off the crashing waves of cocktail delirium. Not that you could ever go that crazy inside the Harbor Room; the stiff concoctions come in glasses about as tall as the building itself, and you wouldn't have the elbow room to throw a punch. Instead, relax (as much as possible) with a large White Russian next to a faded Lakers poster and soak up the sounds of the nearby ocean. That is, when the jukebox isn't wheezing out mid-'70s pop tunes and the old sailors at the bar aren't swapping war stories. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.jdvhotels.com/dining/losangeles/high From seven floors above the Venice Beach boardwalk, it's easy to forget that the rest of Los Angeles exists. That's precisely the point at High Rooftop Lounge, which is nestled on top of the chic boutique Hotel Erwin along a particularly photogenic stretch of ocean real estate. Forget the smoggy views from downtown or the elbow-to-elbow crowds in Hollywood. At High, the main attraction is the 360-degree view; the stellar cocktail menu is simply a bonus. The Blood Orange Julep is particularly satisfying, a delicate mix of small batch bourbon, aromatic mint and fruity bitters that will warm you up faster than the lap blankets provided by the establishment. If you feel like snuggling after the sun's gone down, order a plate of yellowfin tuna tartare from the LED-illuminated menu and grab a seat amongst the clutter of upscale patio furniture if you can. http://www.venicebeachwines.com You may have to battle for a spot at Venice Beach Wines, a 35-seat bar on suddenly hot Rose Avenue on Venice's northern edge, but it's worth it. Formerly a bodega, the spot is half bottle shop and half wine bar; folks come both for the cozy atmosphere and the excellent wine choices. (The recommendations — say, an Albariño with a crisp acidity on the tongue — hold up as well.) One of the best tables in the house is actually a giant stump, trucked down from Oregon. It gives a view of the kitchen, which cooks up grilled sandwiches, local organic salads and artisanal cheese plates. Everything is thought-out and house-made. All in all, it's the type of place that makes you want to linger, which is exactly why it's so difficult to find a place to sit in the first place. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
