Trip

Trip

Perched on the edge of Santa Monica, Trip is indeed a trip. From the outside, it looks like an everyday neighborhood bar, but the club is actually one of the Westside's leading hot spots, with nightly no-cover live music, comedy and burlesque.
The Redwood Bar & Grill

The Redwood Bar & Grill

A longtime haunt for politicians and journalists, this downtown bar hosts an endless parade of punks and roots rockers on its small, low stage, set against a festively nautical backdrop of fishing nets and mermaid paintings.
The Satellite

The Satellite

Once known as Spaceland and, before that, Pan, this Silver Lake bar continues to host before-they're-famous indie-rock bands alongside the occasional anti-comedian and film screening. Mondays are usually no cover.

  • Valentino Restaurant

    Valentino Restaurant

3115 Pico Blvd. Santa Monica, CA 90405
    310-829-4313

http://www.welovewine.com Valentino has long been L.A.¹s ultimate special-occasion Italian restaurant, a bells-and-whistles place where you reserve a table weeks in advance. But it turns out that even Valentino wants to be not just admired, but loved. Its V-vin Bar is a little awkwardly situated within the restaurant, and the grouping of bar tables and sleek bar carts looks a little like what your wealthy uncle tried to do when he set up a pub in the basement of his mansion. Still, the food, sleek Italian small plates mostly, is great. And if you're going to hang out at a wine bar, you might as well head toward one that takes its wine seriously, and although the prices aren't particularly low, the by-the-glass list often includes things like Aldo Conterno Barolo, barrique-aged Altero Brunello, and Dunn "Howell Mountain" cabernet to sip with your giant salumi plate, vintages that aren't exactly on the list at Bodega. • The Veranda Bar at Casa Del Mar Hotel

The Veranda Bar at Casa Del Mar Hotel

1910 Ocean Way Santa Monica, CA 90405-1083
    310-581-5533

http://www.hotelcasadelmar.com/los-angeles-hotel-lobby The vast, jaw-dropping atrium of this gorgeous Santa Monica hotel contains a delightful bar with numerous seating options: a comfortable couch in the library area, wicker chairs at dining tables, seats with views of the fireplace and the ocean. Gorgeous waitresses will occasionally bug you for your order, but they're just as friendly when you say no. This a great place to curl up with a book, meet up with friends, or just nurse a drink. • Ye Olde King

    Ye Olde King's Head Pub

116 Santa Monica Blvd. Santa Monica, CA 90401
    310-451-1402

http://www.yeoldekingshead.com Until the recent gastropub revolution, the food at most pubs in England may have fully justified everything ever muttered in a dark moment about British food. The King’s Head, a dank, overcrowded expat hangout near the Santa Monica Promenade, is no gastropub, but it does serve some of the best beer in town. The food is, unfortunately, all too authentic, pasties and bangers and such, but the fish and chips are everything you could wish for, sweet fillets of North Sea cod, enrobed in light batter and fried to a delicate crunch.
