http://www.94thvannuys.com Perched on the edge of Van Nuys Airport, the 94th Aero Squadron is a restaurant and lounge where patrons can dine, drink, dance and listen to live music while watching planes land on a nearby runway. The dining room, bar and downstairs banquet rooms are a curious combination of elegant decor and kitschy war and aviation memorabilia. The tables and booths are covered with fine white linens and decorated with sumptuous bouquets of fresh flowers, while the walls are mounted with vintage recruitment posters, model planes and flight gear. In an unusual twist, headphones are installed at each booth so diners can listen in to live transmissions from the airport's control tower. Given the lounge's retro feel, the musical entertainment includes jazz and big-band revivalists, as well as more modern pop groups. Although the restaurant is kid friendly, with plenty of toys and artifacts to distract and inspire budding young pilots, the 94th Aero Squadron is above all a popular destination for couples to enjoy a traditional American-style meal and a drink before jetting off to some romantic getaway. The outdoor patio is an excellent place to get even closer to the adjoining runway and watch the wide variety of private aircraft and bigger jets landing and taking off. The restaurant specializes in high-end comfort food and such traditional favorites as burgers, steaks, filet mignon, seafood and pasta, along with house specialties like beer-cheese soup and crab-stuffed mushrooms. Happy hour occurs every Monday through Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m., and the Sunday champagne brunch buffet starts early at 9 a.m. The lavish banquet rooms are also available for private parties and weddings. There's free parking in the front lot. Full bar. All ages. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

http://www.thebakedpotato.com Since 1970, when the noted keyboardist Don Randi opened this Studio City bar and restaurant, the Baked Potato has been one of Los Angeles' leading jazz clubs. Unlike many jazz venues, the Potato specializes in jazz fusion and has hosted such avant-garde rockers and musicians' musicians as Larry Carlton, Danny Carey, Kevin Eubanks, Andy Summers and Allan Holdsworth. With its low ceiling and wood-paneled walls, which are covered with photos and flyers, the club feels more like a rumpus room or a den than some of the fussier, more-upscale joints in town. Befitting the restaurant's name, the menu features baked-potato dishes, including such unusual variations as maple ham & cheese, sauteed spinach, sauerkraut and teriyaki chicken. Cover varies. All ages. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.bar1noho.com Vinyl-obsessed DJs, strong drinks and sexy red walls make this North Hollywood drinking and dancing hole a hip 'n' happy li'l Valley hub. The crowd ranges from punky to funky, but it's always laid-back (this is "north" Hollywood, after all). The wide range in regulars shows just how diverse NoHo has become (there is no typical "Valley Girl," like back in the '80s), and thanks to the different promotions; featuring DJs from over the city - Bar One boogies with the best. http://www.canyonclub.net A 2,000-pound gold Buddha greets you on entrance, which is fitting since the Canyon is not only the major live-music venue in the West Valley, it's one of the largest bars in the entire city. The expansive, high-ceiling room can seat more than a thousand customers, many of whom sit at long, banquet-size tables that extend outward from the stage. Located in the Whizins Mall, the big music barn is a guitar fetishist's dream, with dozens of autographed classic Gibson guitars mounted on the walls or encased under glass tabletops. A room this big has hosted many big names, including B.B. King, Willie Nelson, the B-52s, Judy Collins, Leon Russell and Peter Frampton, as well as comedians like Don Rickles and Bill Maher. The Canyon has two full bars, and the kitchen serves such tried-&-true staples as steaks, lasagna and filet mignon. Free parking is available in the Whizins Mall lot. All ages, although at some shows ages 18 & under must be accompanied by an adult. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
Opened in 1962 and tucked inside a mini-mall not far away from the retail haven that is Ventura Boulevard, Chimneysweep is the kind of old-school spot the 20-something Valley girls and guys fancy taking over, particularly on weekends. It's retro charming but not in the overt, trying-too-hard way some bars can be. A huge '60s ski-lodge-style fireplace (the big black cone-shaped kind) is the focal point of the room, with a cobblestone table surrounding it for drinks and the bar's all-you-can-eat popcorn bowls. Oliver Twist-style drawings cover the walls (chimney sweeps were actually kiddies back in the day), and an adjacent game room with pool, video games and darts keeps the more-energetic sweepers busy. A great bar to hit during winter time, as the fireplace really heats the place up. Can't get close enough to the fire? The killer drink pours here will do the job. http://www.thedraftbarandgrill.com The Studio City sports bar The Draft Bar & Grill is what you dreamed of as a 16-year-old boy. Here, pool tables and posters of scantily clad women mesh with Babe Ruth iconography, bean bag chairs and video games. From beer pong tournaments to nights with no cover charge for UFC fights, The Draft is a young boy's paradise come to life – and with a liquor license to boot. It's hard to find the bar from behind the nearly 30 TVs or over the rolling din of various sports fans, but when you do, order a pitcher of beer. At $15 for Sierra Nevada, it's a steal, and pairs well with the typical bar food being served here: burgers, hot dogs and a towering Triple Double club sandwich.
