Trip

Trip

Perched on the edge of Santa Monica, Trip is indeed a trip. From the outside, it looks like an everyday neighborhood bar, but the club is actually one of the Westside's leading hot spots, with nightly no-cover live music, comedy and burlesque.
The Redwood Bar & Grill

The Redwood Bar & Grill

A longtime haunt for politicians and journalists, this downtown bar hosts an endless parade of punks and roots rockers on its small, low stage, set against a festively nautical backdrop of fishing nets and mermaid paintings.
The Satellite

The Satellite

Once known as Spaceland and, before that, Pan, this Silver Lake bar continues to host before-they're-famous indie-rock bands alongside the occasional anti-comedian and film screening. Mondays are usually no cover.

  • 1739 Public House

    1739 Public House

1739 N. Vermont Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-663-1739

http://www.1739publichouse.com Whether or not you're a fan of sports bars, you'll probably feel right at home at 1739 Public House, a bastion of unpretentiousness on the hippest stretch of Los Feliz's Vermont Avenue. Parking is always a challenge in this corner of the world, but once you've stowed your car on one of the surrounding side streets, you can pull up a stool at the sparkly red bar and sample 1739's enormous variety of beers from around the world, an exhaustive range of stouts, golden ales, fruit-flavored beers and other nectars that froth forth from the taps. Whether you're seated pointing north, south, east or west, you're bound to be facing at least one of the numerous TV, screening varsity football, basketball and other cheerleader-friendly fare. The crowd is infinitely more low-key frat house than the sartorially conscious clientele at Le Figaro across the road, with a decor that reflects the bar's vibe -- functional and fun. It's an agreeable place to while away an afternoon, although weekends and late evenings can be hectic. And if you feel like a tequila chaser to complement your artisanal beer, walk behind the bar and into Agave next door, which boasts a large selection of tequilas as well as a menu that offers Mexican dishes. Desert Rose Bar & Lounge Inc.

1700 N. Hillhurst Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-666-1166

http://www.desertroserestaurant.com Angelenos have always been suckers for programmatic architecture, eager to eat chili in a chili bowl or munch on doughnuts under a 40-foot cruller, drink beer inside a bucket or consume fried chicken inside an abstracted KFC container. The giant milk bottle on Slauson and the big thermometer in Baker remind us that we exist. Now comes the 20-foot illuminated flower outside the new cocktail-oriented restaurant Desert Rose, towering over the sprawling dining patio, casting a healthy pinkness over agave-nectar margaritas and mojitos, chicken kebabs with hummus, and carpaccio drizzled with chile oil, and gooey crab cakes with tart avocado salad. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner; serves Italian pastas, pan-Asian dumplings and Middle Eastern grilled meats; and at least on opening week was populated by couples of every possible persuasion. In the 1930s, a Los Angeles architect would have found a way to fit the cocktail bar inside the giant, glowing rose. Seventy-five years later, we should be grateful, I suppose, to have a giant, glowing rose at all. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Drawing Room

    Drawing Room

1800 Hillhurst Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027-4408
    323-665-0135

For over 35 years, seven days a week, 365 days a year, this family-owned mini-mall bar has opened at 6 a.m., doing good biz, even early, with film crews, graveyard shifters and sleepless in Silver Lake-rs looking for a lowkey hole to crawl in. The Asian-themed room (a giant dragon replaced a map of the U.S. several years ago on the main wall and random red lanterns are strewn about), offers dark hues, friendly pourers, and a relaxed atmosphere. People come here and stay thanks to the electronic dartboard, TV above the bar, and cozy booths, but it's the prices that keep 'em coming: they start at $3.50 and average about $5. • The Dresden Restaurant

    The Dresden Restaurant

1760 N. Vermont Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-665-4294

http://www.thedresden.com Open for over 60 years, this Hollywood landmark had its moments in the limelight, with stints in movies such as Swingers and That Thing You Do. Live lounge music plays as you take your seat in one of the round booths in the dining room, checking out the menu for seafood as well as meat dishes such as prime rib and roast rack of lamb. For serious meat eaters, there is the Chateaubriand for two. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • The Good Luck Bar

    The Good Luck Bar

1514 Hillhurst Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-666-3524

You may not get "lucky" in the romantic sense at Good Luck Bar, but even if you exit alone, it's hard not to leave with a smile on your face. Good Luck has been around over a decade, and it is arguably one of the most beautiful bars in the area, rivaling any Chinese restaurant in town (and that includes Chinatown). Bathed in dim red light, the place is filled with gilded lanterns (old and new), dragon sculptures, Chinese art, covered with black-and-red flocked wallpaper. Even the ceiling is ornate, an eye-catching square design etched in gold and green. Even with so much to look at, Good Luck manages to seem neither tacky nor fancy. Perhaps it's the crowd that frequents the place that gives it its homey, chill vibe. Silver Lake, Los Feliz and Hollywood residents looking for a post-dinner or movie nightcap (the Vista Theatre's around the corner) make up the bulk of the crowd. With its gorgeous Asian ambiance, nicely packed jukebox, good selection of drinks and friendly servers, it's no ancient Chinese secret why this one's full every night of the week. • Guatelinda

    Guatelinda

4916 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-666-7070

Longtime Hollywood clubgoers who've grown sick of the usual velvet rope scene have been known to venture eastward. And when they do, they're usually swallowed up by Guatelinda, a multifaceted club space next to the Barnsdall Art Park. To say that Guatelinda is a throwback, you'd first have to figure out where the tinsel-fueled, string lights monstrosity came from -- or how it's stayed open so long. The truth is, beyond the routine $10 door charge is a wonderland of diverse dancers and cheaply made stiff drinks, all the better for a dim night of grinding to whatever reggaeton/alt-disco/electronic the rotating DJ happens to have on. The crowd spans the gamut from low key locals to wild-eyed club commuters from deep in the Valley, particularly at the recurring Club Called Rhonda parties, where underground DJ couture meets alleyway chic. All with mandatory Jell-O shots. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Harvard & Stone

    Harvard & Stone

5221 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-466-6061

The Stone Bar came under new ownership in 2010, which means both the crowd and the interior are much less flamboyant (the exotic Thai/Asian fusion that used to embellish the place has been streamlined with a more simple look and its popular Thai-lady drag nights are long gone). The crowds are still as animated as ever, however, thanks to some top-notch promoter events including DJ Adam 12's hip-hop night AFEX on Thursdays, which brings in a hip, multi-culti mix and the occasional star sighting (Stevie Wonder, Salt N Pepa's Spinderella). Private parties make up much of the schedule and everything from after-concert events to magazine- sponsored shindigs and one-offs usually of the electronic-music ilk fills the place. A nice-size dance floor, decent sound and ample (if not quite cheap) bar selections continue to make it a viable multipurpose music and dance pit. There's even a smoking patio in the back, though it might be one of the smallest, narrowest ones in town. Most patrons puff out front. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Jumbo

    Jumbo's Clown Room

5153 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-666-1187

http://www.jumbos.com This legendary bikini bar may not be as seedy as it was in the '80s or even before the '04 city ordinance that made the ladies cover up and wear bikinis during their dances, but Jumbo's will always be a wild time, thanks to titillating entertainment, great music and strong drinks. The family-owned business first opened in its mini-mall location back in 1970, and though it was once known for its less than alluring performers (typified by Courtney Love's druggy dance period), these days it's a bubbling babe-fest, with burlesque-style vignettes and loads of lovely rock 'n' roll-ish lasses and tatted tarts grinding to everything the Stones to Black Sabbath to David Bowie, all showing off athletic pole work and dramatic costumes and themes. For many, the performances onstage have become secondary to the bar's colorful atmosphere itself, but whether you come here to guzzle or ogle, Jumbo's guarantees big fun. • Trepany House at the Steve Allen Theater

Trepany House at the Steve Allen Theater

4773 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-666-4268

http://www.trepanyhouse.org Tucked into Los Feliz's Center for Inquiry-West, the Trepany House at the Steve Allen Theater is an intimate performing venue that presents a wide array of concerts, plays, vaudeville and comedy. When the theater first began putting on shows, it focused on comedians like Dana Gould, Emo Philips, Mary Lynn Rajskub and Kids in the Hall, as well as theatrical productions and esoteric philosophical and metaphysical explorations by everyone from NASA scientists to members of the Church of Satan. Before long, the theater also brought in live musicians, including the daft ragtime diva Janet Klein, Lavender Diamond and the charming pop duo the Ditty Bops mingling with harder-edged sounds from Rancid and Dethklok. Added to the mix is the center's ongoing fascination with horror and film culture, with presentations and screenings by the likes of Toby Hooper, Joe Dante, David Cronenberg, Miranda July and James Franco. In homage to its namesake inspiration, the late comedian Steve Allen, the theater is an unusual nexus point of scientific curiosity and vaudevillian variety. • Vinoteca Farfalla

    Vinoteca Farfalla

1968 Hillhurst Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-661-8070

http://www.vinotecafarfalla.com A wine and beer bar in Los Feliz with Italian/Brazilian food, Vinoteca Farfalla on Hillhurst tends to attract a crowd from 4 to 7 p.m – perhaps because the extensive wine list and simple selection of draft beers are all discounted. The happy hour nibbling section of the menu is sparse but enjoyable, with simple plates of prosciutto, goat cheese and mozzarella alongside ceviche or a burger. There are more extensive offerings in the evenings; they change frequently, but include Brazilian favorites like empanadas, as well as Italian specialties like risotto. The dim and inviting space is nearly ceiling to floor with wine bottles, only stopping to make room for the taps, a drink chalkboard, and the warm wooden bar that runs nearly the length of the room. • Ye Rustic Inn

    Ye Rustic Inn

1831 Hillhurst Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-662-5757

Rustic has been around since the '70's, but for the last two decades or so, it's remained a pitstop for young, hip types living in Silver Lake and Los Feliz, with many hopping back and forth between it and the equally divey Drawing Room across the street. It's a slummer hotspot, fueled by loud rock n' roll on the juke and neon-lit atmosphere (other than sponsored liquor signs, the fanciest things in the place are deer antler chandeliers). It gets rowdier during big games, when team-garbed sports buffs and local grubbers come to watch their favorite warriors battle on numerous TVs. The food is a big draw with the latter crews, too. Rustic's mouth-watering bar menu boasts some of the best greasy grub in town: chili fries, fish and chips, hot wings and for those who like to really kick their day off, their famous Bloody Mary Breakfast.
