http://www.bluewhalemusic.com If the true art of jazz is improvisation, it makes sense that Little Tokyo's Blue Whale jazz club seems to pop up out of nowhere. The in-the-moment space atop Weller Court is a dim mix of modern lines and classic looks, much like the genre-mixing music that emerges nightly from the open stage. The eclectic audience queues up at the bar in the back, or slumps into one of the many padded benches that surround the impeccable performers. For those in need of satiation, the small kitchen churns out top-notch small plates Tuesday through Saturday, from an early tomato polenta to a series of pulled pork sliders. The house cocktails and small collection of local craft beers keep everyone tapping their feet to the sometimes bluesy tunes that emerge from the best jazz players in the country. http://www.grandstarjazzclub.com A family-owned business in Chinatown dating back to 1946, Grand Star hosts some wild dance-party happenings. The former Chinese restaurant's relaxed, almost-underground atmosphere works for just about any promotion that goes down here on weekends, from sweaty hip-hop ragers like "Boombox" to sexy disco soirees like "Full Frontal." Jazz bands and karaoke fill up the weeknight schedule. The miniature Saturday Night Fever-like light-up dance floor definitely enhances retro-themed events, while the alley location gives Grand Star a charm pretty much unmatched in club venues in Chinatown or anywhere. The nightclub is nestled in a picturesque Chinatown plaza on Broadway, just steps away from the old Hong Kong Cafe, among the brightly painted buildings that are clustered around a festive courtyard festooned with red Chinese hanging lanterns. The bar has a long, storied history and was once a favorite hangout for the legendary Mexican comedian Cantinflas and his friends. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.hoplouiela.com Hop Louie is not a destination for great Chinese food, but it is a cultural artifact. Built in Chinatown in 1941, the cocktails are cheaper than what you’d pay at other spots – particularly in the nearby downtown area – and the vibe is kitschy enough to make you not care that the food is only mediocre. However, if you're going to order some eats, go for the crab Rangoon, egg rolls or fried rice. And in the meantime, enjoy the jukebox filled with classic pop oldies, the makeshift dance floor, and the much appreciated low-key vibe. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.themountainbar.com Once you get to the walking street called Gin Ling Way, across Hill Street from the gallery-intensive Chung King Road, it's easy to find this red-hued drinking den. Just stroll under rows of illuminated lanterns and between the pagoda-shaped shops until you find the mass of people nestled outside smoking cigarettes. The bar at the back of the main room, adorned with Asian wood-carved shelves that display bottles and Buddhas, is usually standing room only, except for a long banquette that lines one wall and a couple chairs around the columns. Most people head to the opium-den lair upstairs, where beds and dark-wood alcoves filled with silk pillows and cushions offer pockets of privacy amid the party-atmosphere.
