Trip

Trip

Perched on the edge of Santa Monica, Trip is indeed a trip. From the outside, it looks like an everyday neighborhood bar, but the club is actually one of the Westside's leading hot spots, with nightly no-cover live music, comedy and burlesque.
The Redwood Bar & Grill

The Redwood Bar & Grill

A longtime haunt for politicians and journalists, this downtown bar hosts an endless parade of punks and roots rockers on its small, low stage, set against a festively nautical backdrop of fishing nets and mermaid paintings.
The Satellite

The Satellite

Once known as Spaceland and, before that, Pan, this Silver Lake bar continues to host before-they're-famous indie-rock bands alongside the occasional anti-comedian and film screening. Mondays are usually no cover.

  • The Yard House

    The Yard House

1875 Newport Blvd. Costa Mesa, CA 92627
    949-642-0090

http://www.yardhouse.com It can be argued the Yardhouse franchise is among the original gastropubs, with its emphasis on carefully crafted cuisine and unique mixed drinks. But Yardhouse is best-known for its vast beer selection, with 180 on tap. The selection changes slightly with the seasons, but a majority are available year-round. The Yardhouse also offers mixed drinks: cocktails, martinis, even beer combinations. The interior is dark, with rich, wooden booths and tables with low-slung lights hovering above. The best lighting can be found at the brushed, stainless-steel bar in the middle of the room, showing they know what matters here. Large, modern-art murals hang over black- leather booths, and there are more than a dozen flat-screen TVs spread throughout the room. The Yardhouse in Costa Mesa also features a patio that looks out onto Newport Boulevard. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

http://www.theyardsm.com Revamped and reopened in 2009 with celebrity chef CJ Jacobson, from Bravo's third season of Top Chef, The Yard is an often-crowded gastropub steps from Santa Monica beach. CJ's signature dishes include fish tacos with cumin slaw, grilled skirt steak, crispy beef cheek, diver scallops with mandarin and pulled pork sloppy joe sliders. • Yatai Asian Tapas Bar

    Yatai Asian Tapas Bar

8535 W. Sunset Blvd. West Hollywood, CA 90069
    310-289-0030

http://www.yatai-bar.com The similarity between the Spanish tapas bar and the Japanese izakaya has been long noted — both are places where the cooking is subsidiary to the drinking, where immoderate consumption is both encouraged and facilitated, and where the portions are just big enough to get you through to the next glass. Yatai, a pleasantly sleek patio restaurant tucked away off the Sunset Strip, is a Japanese izakaya pretending to be an American joint pretending to be an izakaya, if you know what I mean, although the putative concept is Asian street food. (The only “street foods” you’ll find here are the sticks of satay and the deep-fried Japanese potato balls stuffed with bits of octopus tentacle.) The customers, most of whom seem to be Japanese-speaking hipsters, groove on the Indonesian gado-gado, the chicken dumplings with Thai curry, the samosas and the gooey, apple-spiked “Korean-style” sashimi as much as they do on the soy-paper sushi rolls and tempura. Yatai has the usual shortlist of soju cocktails and Pacific Rim wines, but there is also a nicely edited selection of cold sakes. I liked the Tomoju, which had a faint but distinct aftertaste of the wax lips you probably used to chew on as a kid. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Ye Olde King

    Ye Olde King's Head Pub

116 Santa Monica Blvd. Santa Monica, CA 90401
    310-451-1402

http://www.yeoldekingshead.com Until the recent gastropub revolution, the food at most pubs in England may have fully justified everything ever muttered in a dark moment about British food. The King’s Head, a dank, overcrowded expat hangout near the Santa Monica Promenade, is no gastropub, but it does serve some of the best beer in town. The food is, unfortunately, all too authentic, pasties and bangers and such, but the fish and chips are everything you could wish for, sweet fillets of North Sea cod, enrobed in light batter and fried to a delicate crunch. • Ye Rustic Inn

    Ye Rustic Inn

1831 Hillhurst Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-662-5757

Rustic has been around since the '70's, but for the last two decades or so, it's remained a pitstop for young, hip types living in Silver Lake and Los Feliz, with many hopping back and forth between it and the equally divey Drawing Room across the street. It's a slummer hotspot, fueled by loud rock n' roll on the juke and neon-lit atmosphere (other than sponsored liquor signs, the fanciest things in the place are deer antler chandeliers). It gets rowdier during big games, when team-garbed sports buffs and local grubbers come to watch their favorite warriors battle on numerous TVs. The food is a big draw with the latter crews, too. Rustic's mouth-watering bar menu boasts some of the best greasy grub in town: chili fries, fish and chips, hot wings and for those who like to really kick their day off, their famous Bloody Mary Breakfast. • The York

    The York

5018 York Blvd. Highland Park, CA 90042
    323-255-9675

http://www.theyorkonyork.com A hip, brick-walled gastropub with a New York atmosphere and a menu that occasionally changes with the seasons. The food is meant to go with alcohol, though, with items like beer-battered fish & chips, truffle mac & cheese, and a cheddar burger. Brunch is offered on weekends, along with the full regular menu. There are literally dozens of special beers, microbrews and drafts listed on large chalkboards on the brick walls of the bar, with special drafts that change daily. The York is very much a neighborhood bar, bringing in a loyal crowd from the northeast side of L.A. Many of the musicians who perform on the club's tiny stage, wedged into a corner near the front entrance, also hail from the area, giving the place a homey feel. • Yucatan Grill

    Yucatan Grill

550 Pacific Coast Highway Seal Beach, CA 90740
    562-430-4422

http://www.yucatangrill.com If the baffling neon color scheme doesn't dissuade you from entering, you'll be rewarded with a stunning offering of Caribbean specialties. Order the steak Palomilla, a husky chunk of marinated steak topped with a garlicky garnish called mojo. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
