Trip

Trip

Perched on the edge of Santa Monica, Trip is indeed a trip. From the outside, it looks like an everyday neighborhood bar, but the club is actually one of the Westside's leading hot spots, with nightly no-cover live music, comedy and burlesque.
The Redwood Bar & Grill

The Redwood Bar & Grill

A longtime haunt for politicians and journalists, this downtown bar hosts an endless parade of punks and roots rockers on its small, low stage, set against a festively nautical backdrop of fishing nets and mermaid paintings.
The Satellite

The Satellite

Once known as Spaceland and, before that, Pan, this Silver Lake bar continues to host before-they're-famous indie-rock bands alongside the occasional anti-comedian and film screening. Mondays are usually no cover.

  • Village Idiot

    Village Idiot

7383 Melrose Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90046
    323-655-3331

http://www.villageidiotla.com The Village Idiot, housed within the scraped, hollow bones of the former Chianti, is the biggest gastropub in town at the moment, a vast place dominated by the surging throngs around the bar, a pub where you can get fish ’n’ chips, pints of hand-drawn cider, but also seasonal crunchy cornmeal-crusted catfish, grilled chicken with bread salad, and a delicate goat-cheese tart served underneath a refreshing fennel salad. Are there salads with candied nuts and blue cheese, braised pork, and a version of the Father’s Office burger? Of course. The shouted, ale-lubricated conversation is probably half the reason for coming here — the ratio of great-looking women to shaggy indie boys may be the most impressive in all of Los Angeles. • Vinoteca Farfalla

    Vinoteca Farfalla

1968 Hillhurst Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-661-8070

http://www.vinotecafarfalla.com A wine and beer bar in Los Feliz with Italian/Brazilian food, Vinoteca Farfalla on Hillhurst tends to attract a crowd from 4 to 7 p.m – perhaps because the extensive wine list and simple selection of draft beers are all discounted. The happy hour nibbling section of the menu is sparse but enjoyable, with simple plates of prosciutto, goat cheese and mozzarella alongside ceviche or a burger. There are more extensive offerings in the evenings; they change frequently, but include Brazilian favorites like empanadas, as well as Italian specialties like risotto. The dim and inviting space is nearly ceiling to floor with wine bottles, only stopping to make room for the taps, a drink chalkboard, and the warm wooden bar that runs nearly the length of the room. • The Virgil

    The Virgil

4519 Santa Monica Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90029
    323-660-4540

http://www.thevirgil.com Formerly the longtime rock den the Garage and then a dance club called Little Temple, the Virgil is the latest incarnation of this Silver Lake venue, which is owned by the same folks behind Zanzibar and the old Temple Bar. Newly reinvented as a specialty craft cocktail bar, the Virgil is divided into a "stage side," with live performances and DJs spinning everything from hip-hop and reggae to soul, deep house and world music, and a smaller "B-side bar," where happy hour occurs from Monday to Saturday. Mezcal Mondays feature special mezcal cocktails. The "urban zen" decor combines Chinese lanterns and candles with a Moroccan look in the lounge. The Virgil has several rooms, with two full bars. Ages 21 & over. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Vitello

    Vitello's Italian Restaurant

4349 Tujunga Ave. Studio City, CA 91604
    818-769-0905

http://www.vitellosrestaurant.com Not only is Vitello's one of Studio City's most popular and romantic Italian restaurants, its upstairs lounge features top-flight traditional jazz legends, comedians and Broadway performers. Decked out in colorful Italian murals and jazzy artwork, the restaurant serves generous portions of classic Italian fare, including mostaccioli al forno, manicotti and pizzetti, much of it smothered in Vitello's famous red sauce. The downstairs Opera Room is a cozy space that includes Joe's Bar and spotlights smaller combos and chanteuses belting out standards, while the larger upstairs area, which boasts great sound and a baby grand piano, is reserved for big-name, straight-ahead jazz veterans, as well as comedy and Broadway revues. Full bar. All ages. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Viva Cantina

    Viva Cantina

900 Riverside Drive Burbank, CA 91506
    818-845-2425

http://www.vivacantina.com Snug beside the Equestrian Center (riders frequently tether their mounts outside), this Mexican restaurant features top country musicians in its ranch-style front bar. Cody Bryant, Kathy Robertson, Jimmy Lee Harris, Lisa Finnie and the legendary truck-driving bard Red Simpson are among the many national and local country musicians who've appeared at this unpretentious Burbank watering hole, which is located by Griffith Park and close to several nearby stables. The club presents a weekly bluegrass night and the monthly rock-country-roots roundup the Messaround. Decorated with horse-themed memorabilia, the dining room specializes in Mexican cuisine, and diners and drinkers can also sit for a spell in Viva Cantina's outdoor patio. The full bar features a wide range of beers, and the proprietors boast that they've got "lots of tequila" on hand. The owners may joke that "service is sporadic but sincere," but the overall vibe is welcoming and low key, and there is no dress code. Free parking is available in Viva Cantina's lot and in Pickwick Recreation Center across the street. No cover. All ages. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Voyeur

    Voyeur

7969 Santa Monica Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90046
    310-255-1111

http://www.voyeur7969.com Much has been made of Voyeur's provocative, Eyes Wide Shut-inspired theme (go-go dancers here don wigs, masks and fetishistic gear and often grind on each other), but those who remember the space's former incarnation might say it's comparatively tame. (Peanuts, as it was called previously, had S&M, tranny and topless nights.) Still, this black-lacquer and leather-covered environment is as undeniably sultry as it is swanky, with plenty of private nooks for frisky behavior. The out-of-sight VIP areas make Voyeur popular with the starlet set, as does the club's "no cameras" policy. Of course, just outside of the place, stalkerazzi flashbulbs are the norm. If the sights here don't turn you on, the sips sure will: The cocktail menu includes watermelon-jalapeno-, blueberry-mint- and cucumber-olive-infused shots.
