http://www.welovewine.com Valentino has long been L.A.¹s ultimate special-occasion Italian restaurant, a bells-and-whistles place where you reserve a table weeks in advance. But it turns out that even Valentino wants to be not just admired, but loved. Its V-vin Bar is a little awkwardly situated within the restaurant, and the grouping of bar tables and sleek bar carts looks a little like what your wealthy uncle tried to do when he set up a pub in the basement of his mansion. Still, the food, sleek Italian small plates mostly, is great. And if you're going to hang out at a wine bar, you might as well head toward one that takes its wine seriously, and although the prices aren't particularly low, the by-the-glass list often includes things like Aldo Conterno Barolo, barrique-aged Altero Brunello, and Dunn "Howell Mountain" cabernet to sip with your giant salumi plate, vintages that aren't exactly on the list at Bodega. http://www.vanguardla.com One of L.A.'s most expansive dance floors attracts a world-class roster of turntable wonders (Saturdays), but Vanguard's appeal goes beyond the floor. The outdoor patio, done like Miami-Beach-meets-Asian-oasis, offers a relaxed escape from the throb of the main room, and the red-hued upstairs area is a great place to chill or thrill to separate DJs, not to mention a chance to check out the chaos below via giant windows overlooking the floor. Lasers, video monitors and vibrant lighting throughout make this Hollywood danceteria a mega-experience, whether it's blasting electro rave sounds, hip-hop or crowd-pleaser hits. http://www.thevarnishbar.com Even on a block crowded with bars, there is a sense of adventure every time you stumble into this downtown cocktail bar -- a tiny, dimly lit room, which lies behind an unmarked door at the back of Cole's. The wooden booths here are styled after the seats on the old Red Cars, whose tracks still lie directly underneath the building. And the drinks are pretty close to perfect, both the classic Prohibition-era cocktails and the cocktails that could pass for vintage if they didn't include things like chile or mezcal. There is no better place for an Aviation at the end of the night. And if you ask nicely, somebody may show you to the peephole outside in the hallway, looking down onto a cracked-open suitcase, frilly contents spilling down the stairs toward the abandoned subway below. http://www.panoramaonview.org A curious combination of the old and the new, the Velaslavasay Panorama is one of this city's most unusual venues. Located just north of the USC campus, the West Adams space includes a performance hall, theater and garden, all of which are dedicated to reviving the vanishing art of panoramic painting. At one time, such displays, with their large, circular 360-degree landscapes and sound-art effects, were precursors to motion pictures, creating "a complete sensory phenomenon" through the illusion of movement and 3-D depth. These days, the Velaslavasay Panorama uses this venerable art form as a backdrop for live indie-music concerts and avant-garde and experimental exhibitions, as well as more traditional entertainment, such as silent-film screenings and toy-theater productions. For several years, the Panorama was based at the picturesque Tswuun-Tswuun Rotunda in Hollywood before moving in 2005 to its present location at the former Union Theatre in the West Adams district. Featuring exotic and even carnivorous plants like the Venus Flytrap, the current site's back garden is a place where artists and musicians show can how the natural and artistic worlds are blended in a state of "living garden wonder." All ages. Street parking. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.venicebeachwines.com You may have to battle for a spot at Venice Beach Wines, a 35-seat bar on suddenly hot Rose Avenue on Venice's northern edge, but it's worth it. Formerly a bodega, the spot is half bottle shop and half wine bar; folks come both for the cozy atmosphere and the excellent wine choices. (The recommendations — say, an Albariño with a crisp acidity on the tongue — hold up as well.) One of the best tables in the house is actually a giant stump, trucked down from Oregon. It gives a view of the kitchen, which cooks up grilled sandwiches, local organic salads and artisanal cheese plates. Everything is thought-out and house-made. All in all, it's the type of place that makes you want to linger, which is exactly why it's so difficult to find a place to sit in the first place. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.hotelcasadelmar.com/los-angeles-hotel-lobby The vast, jaw-dropping atrium of this gorgeous Santa Monica hotel contains a delightful bar with numerous seating options: a comfortable couch in the library area, wicker chairs at dining tables, seats with views of the fireplace and the ocean. Gorgeous waitresses will occasionally bug you for your order, but they're just as friendly when you say no. This a great place to curl up with a book, meet up with friends, or just nurse a drink. http://www.figueroahotel.com Ah... the Veranda Bar. It's a breath of fresh air from the bustle of downtown. The outdoor area is surrounded with lush plants. As you lounge in a chair by the pool and sip on a crisp, cold cocktail (which they make decently strong), you're instantly relaxed. An eclectic mix of people are there to do the same thing - unwind. Close to USC, the classy Veranda Bar is frequented by students, businessmen, young couples and tourists alike. Its a great place to sit on a warm summer night and make good conversation with friends. Five thousand karaoke song choices in six different languages make picking one difficult, but the more important decision is what to drink. Their soju, a fruit-infused korean vodka is a must-try. But be careful - its fruity lightness makes this high-alcohol content beverage a little too easy to drink. You might end up on stage singing I Honestly Love You to a stranger. http://www.vermontrestaurantonline.com Anchoring the commercial corridor of Vermont Avenue north of Sunset, Vermont (always lowercase) is like a stalwart, reliable friend. The owners often wander through the dining room, with its palmettos and pillars and gentle lighting, and they always like to chat. You may not be bowled over by anything you eat, but you'll be back. Plus, the stylish bar is one of the neighborhood's few upscale spots for cocktails. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.verticalwinebistro.com Probably the swankest wine bar in Old Town Pasadena, this high-design joint juts from a hidden courtyard on Raymond’s restaurant row, all subdued lighting and gleaming surfaces and hidden corners. You will never, never feel out of place in an LBD or a pinstriped Thom Browne suit here, or lack for well-heeled admirers. But Vertical is more ambitious than that: It aspires to be nothing less than the Pasadena equivalent of A.O.C., with zillions of wines available by the taste, the glass, the bottle and the flight — three side-by-side Williams Selyem pinot noirs, for example, or New Zealand sauvignon blancs, or Argentine malbecs. Vertical is a showcase of artisanal cheeses and cured meats, Serrano-ham-wrapped date poppers and meaty, grape-friendly small dishes, and duck confit with mustard greens. If you would rather look into the depths of a Barolo-braised brisket than into the eyes of an attractive stranger, at Vertical it can always be arranged.
