Trip

Trip

Perched on the edge of Santa Monica, Trip is indeed a trip. From the outside, it looks like an everyday neighborhood bar, but the club is actually one of the Westside's leading hot spots, with nightly no-cover live music, comedy and burlesque.
The Redwood Bar & Grill

The Redwood Bar & Grill

A longtime haunt for politicians and journalists, this downtown bar hosts an endless parade of punks and roots rockers on its small, low stage, set against a festively nautical backdrop of fishing nets and mermaid paintings.
The Satellite

The Satellite

Once known as Spaceland and, before that, Pan, this Silver Lake bar continues to host before-they're-famous indie-rock bands alongside the occasional anti-comedian and film screening. Mondays are usually no cover.

  • Trepany House at the Steve Allen Theater

Trepany House at the Steve Allen Theater

4773 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-666-4268

http://www.trepanyhouse.org Tucked into Los Feliz's Center for Inquiry-West, the Trepany House at the Steve Allen Theater is an intimate performing venue that presents a wide array of concerts, plays, vaudeville and comedy. When the theater first began putting on shows, it focused on comedians like Dana Gould, Emo Philips, Mary Lynn Rajskub and Kids in the Hall, as well as theatrical productions and esoteric philosophical and metaphysical explorations by everyone from NASA scientists to members of the Church of Satan. Before long, the theater also brought in live musicians, including the daft ragtime diva Janet Klein, Lavender Diamond and the charming pop duo the Ditty Bops mingling with harder-edged sounds from Rancid and Dethklok. Added to the mix is the center's ongoing fascination with horror and film culture, with presentations and screenings by the likes of Toby Hooper, Joe Dante, David Cronenberg, Miranda July and James Franco. In homage to its namesake inspiration, the late comedian Steve Allen, the theater is an unusual nexus point of scientific curiosity and vaudevillian variety. • Stout

    Stout

1544 N. Cahuenga Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90028
    323-469-3801

http://www.stoutburgersandbeers.com Located in the heart of Hollywood along the glittery nightlife row known as the Cahuenga Corridor, this cool and dark pub has a neighborhood vibe. The simple decor features brick walls and wooden tables, with several flat-screen TVs dialed into sports. Two of the walls are really see-through plastic tarps, which can be rolled up in warm weather to give that side of the room an open-air feel. Since it's open till 4 a.m., Stout is a good place for late-night clubgoers and gourmands to unwind and a shadowy oasis for young lovers to slip away from the hubbub of Hollywood. As the name implies, Stout is all about the beer, and they specialize in plenty of unusual types, including micro-brews, Belgian blondes, wheat ales and gluten-free beers. The beers on tap rotate weekly and tend to be on the artisanal side. As good as the beers are, many of the regulars really come here for the burgers, which range from classic styles to inventive Italian, Greek and Bollywood variations. Parking is available in the adjoining lot. Beer & wine only. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

    The Strange

4316 Melrose Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90029
    323-953-8929

http://www.thestrange-la.com This nonprofit art gallery/music space lives up to its name with a wildly mixed array of entertainment most nights and a somewhat unexpected locale, sandwiched between retail shops on Melrose Avenue's Eastside hub, a few skips away from Los Angeles City College. Performances by bands, comedians and various visual artists are showcased Fridays and Saturdays in these loftlike industrial-style environs, and various eves throughout the week. A black-clad goth crowd gathers for the space's popular "Submersion" night, featuring gloomy-good bands and DJs rocking the floor the first Friday of the month, while a decidedly sunnier set romps early the first Sunday of every month during "The Breakfast Show," a children's happening with free cereal, hosted by comedian Adam Shankman. No alcohol sold at the venue, but individual promoters often bring it in and request donations. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
