Trip

Trip

Perched on the edge of Santa Monica, Trip is indeed a trip. From the outside, it looks like an everyday neighborhood bar, but the club is actually one of the Westside's leading hot spots, with nightly no-cover live music, comedy and burlesque.
The Redwood Bar & Grill

The Redwood Bar & Grill

A longtime haunt for politicians and journalists, this downtown bar hosts an endless parade of punks and roots rockers on its small, low stage, set against a festively nautical backdrop of fishing nets and mermaid paintings.
The Satellite

The Satellite

Once known as Spaceland and, before that, Pan, this Silver Lake bar continues to host before-they're-famous indie-rock bands alongside the occasional anti-comedian and film screening. Mondays are usually no cover.

  • Seven Grand

    Seven Grand

515 W. Seventh St. Los Angeles, CA 90014
    213-614-0737

http://www.sevengrand.la Located in the historic part of downtown on the second floor of a grand old building on Grand Street, this venerable whiskey bar has the look and feel of a classic hunting lodge. Outdoorsy tableaux and the skeletons of various animals are spotlighted in glass, museum-style display cases, and the bar's high walls are mounted with more than a dozen deer-head trophies and other taxidermy specimens. The hunting motif continues with fox-and-hound-patterned wallpaper and a row of fanciful lamps that sprout with the antlers of mythical jackalopes. The Irish bar boasts more than 265 brands of whiskey and bourbon, and the joint encompasses a large room with a pool table that's reportedly 150 years old, as well as smaller, more intimate lounge areas. In keeping with Seven Grand's vintage aesthetic, live jazz and blues groups perform Monday through Wednesday, along with traditional Celtic folk combos, but local indie-pop bands occasionally sit in, bringing an air of contrasting modernity. The dress code is formal, with shorts, flip-flops and "overly baggy" pants not allowed. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Sgt. Pepper

    Sgt. Pepper's Dueling Piano Cafe

91 Pine Ave. Long Beach, CA 90802
    562-499-4600

http://www.pepperspianos.com Sgt. Pepper's Dueling Piano Cafe probably isn't the best place for wall flowers or lounge rats. Tables line the lower tier with all chairs facing toward a small stage where, true to the venue's name, two pianists have at each other by banging on their keyboards rather than each other's faces. Toss in a few drinks and some raunchy humor and you can imagine that this place can get pretty rowdy on a Friday night. Be prepared to sing and dance along because the performers pack LED flashlights to single out party poopers with a light to the face and a barrage of "Boos." All that said, Sgt. Pepper's is a great place to let loose and watch your friends make asses of themselves on stage. There's also a family-friendly show offered during the day! • Shannon

    Shannon's

    5335 E. 2nd St. Long Beach, CA 90803-5335
    562-433-5901

Located in the boutique-heavy Belmont Shore region of Long Beach, Shannon's is a watering hole for those who aren't inclined to dye their immaculately-coifed poodles hot pink. And though the barroom is no nonsense— offering up standard, but stiffly mixed drinks, as well as beers by the bottle and tap—it's large. Taking up a half of the impossibly narrow room, the bartop is long and its most distant regions are typically obscured by throngs of merry revelers. The far end of the room opens up a bit and features a two small booths. Keep going, and you'll eventually find the single pool table. The wood-panelled walls call to mind the innards of an old-timey ship, and are adorned with dollar bills autographed by regular patrons. There are also two gold records hanging near the front of the room, reportedly gifts of the band Sublime, whose members used to drink there. Eleven flat-screen TVs flicker an assortment of sporting events and beers on tap include Bud Light, Coors Light, Pyramid Hefenweizen, Blue Moon and Newcastle. Highlights of the bottled variety include Pacifica and Killian's Red. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Shannon

    Shannon's on Pine

209 Pine Ave. Long Beach, CA 90802
    562-436-4363

Shannon's is a sports bar with a locals-only vibe. If you're new meat, don't expect them to roll out the welcome mat. But do expect stiff drinks from the tall, extensive, supremely stocked full bar, which also includes a nice selection of draft beers (go Shock Top). The high-ceilinged, wood-paneled room has four flat screens flickering images of Lakers games, as well as one massive big-screen. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Shellback Tavern

    Shellback Tavern

116 Manhattan Beach Blvd. Manhattan Beach, CA 90266
    310-376-7857

http://www.shellbacktavern.com As beachside developments continue to edge out the minnows, old-school bars like The Shellback Tavern in Manhattan Beach are increasingly rare. Just 50 yards east of the ocean, the beer pours cold at the Shellback and you can still find tequila shots for a dollar. Twelve bucks will net you a steak and a beer on Tuesday nights (don't say we didn't warn you), and on weekends you can try your stomach at two fried eggs and a plate of hash browns. Otherwise, it's all about the booze at the Shellback, thanks to owner Bob Beverly, and the endless supply of bikini-topped ladies and board shorts-wearing men who have the bar humming all night long. • Shore Ultra Lounge

    Shore Ultra Lounge

6200 E. Second St. Long Beach, CA 90803
    562-277-4829

http://www.shoreultralounge.com The Shore Ultra Lounge of Long Beach is hard to miss, its large illuminated sign facing right towards 2nd Street. If you roll in on a Friday or Saturday night, expect a $10 cover unless you've entered your name on the online guest list, a feature that gets you in for free before 10 p.m. Shore's showroom features a small stage for live performances and what has been dubbed the Ice Room, a tiny glowing blue chamber where you can take iced vodka shots. A second dance room hosts a separate DJ and the main bar where glowing bottles of liquor line a giant "X" suspended from the ceiling. Bar service is generally quick and crowd activities can vary from good-natured bumping and grinding to some mild moshing at the foot of the stage. Just a heads up: stripper pole. • Short Stop

    Short Stop

1455 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90026
    213-482-4942

On weekends and hot DJ nights (Wednesdays and Thursdays) there is literally a line down the block to get into this popular Echo Park bar (named for its proximity of Dodger Stadium), and for the most part it's worth the wait. The red-hued dance room feels like a bonafide dance club, but the place is always free and filled with hip yet friendly local boogie-ers and barhoppers. There's a great pool table area, a black & white photo booth that's extra brightly lit and thereby makes everyone look good, and a guy often selling $1 tamales near the door (the ubiquitous bacon-wrapped hot dog vendors are always outside too). It might be a scenester circus, but the Short Stop's also made a point of keeping around reminders of the day when it was a popular policeman hangout: memorabilia like billyclub parts, badges, patches and gun lockers, and a bounty of bullet holes behind the bar and in the front door. • Silverlake Lounge

    Silverlake Lounge

2906 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90026
    323-663-9636

http://www.thesilverlakelounge.com For many years, this longtime Silver Lake bar has presented transgender Latino shows. The cozy, narrow bar is dark, the small stage is low, and the sound system is basic, but the club's iconic neon "Salvation" sign has beckoned adventurous groups for more than a decade, including Metric, Nellie McKay, Les Baton Rouge, Wye Oak, Liz Pappademas and Mr. Gnome. Indie-rock promoters the Fold were based here for many years before giving away to other booking agents. Seating is available at the bar and on a long bench along the wall, with Chinese lanterns giving the dimly lit room a little bit of festive color. Full bar. Ages 21 & over. Parking available in a small adjoining lot and on the street. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Simmzy

    Simmzy's

229 Manhattan Beach Blvd. Manhattan Beach, CA 90266
    310-546-1201

http://www.simmzys.com The first thing you'll notice at Simmzy's in Manhattan Beach is the beer list; it's scrawled across the walls like an alcoholic's ever-changing wallpaper. The taps do rotate frequently at this gastropub, but always flow with local craft beers or specialty standouts that have caught the eyes of owners Chris and Mike Simms. Reasonable wines are also available by the glass, but when the smothered blue cheese string fries and the juicy pub burger come out you'll wish you had a pint instead of the pinot. The best seats in the house are actually outside on the patio, within sight of the Manhattan Beach pier. No matter where you manage to find a table, expect a surprising amount of noise from the laid-back clientele. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
